Lighting/Texturing Question?

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, however I'm working on the current competetion and wanted to use the "Eleven" rig and I've gotten him to light relatively well using the Arnold renderer, however I can not get his eyes to light properly while inside his head. If I move the eyes outside of the skull, they light, however while inside the skull it appears as matte black. I've tried reattaching textures, putting lights closer to the eyes, and creating an entirely new texture to it. If anyone has any insight, please let me know. Thanks!
(they also work if i pull them a little out)

Is there a "clear coat" layer on top of the eye that isn't transparent or using an arnold shader?
