August WIP - SEE IF YOU CAN SPOT EM!

Hey everybody! I haven't entered the contest in several months but having lived in New York City and been a big fan of Hamilton I figured I would enter for August. Here is a wip playblast, any feedback is always encouraged!

Keep in mind all the animation is still in flat tangents right now.

Here is an update with adjusted lighting, materials, and more polished movements. I added some camera shake as well. Next up is improving the hand animations. Comments and crits welcome!

Nice! I don't think i have enough experience to offer any helpful feedback but in my opinion the facial expressions don't seem to match the feel of the audio. Particularly the eyes. Seems like hes surprised or worried. Maybe lower the eyelids? This is still incredible though! I hope you start participating in the competitions more regularly again!

Thank you ayejaye! I appreciate the kind words. I will keep an eye on the expression in the eyes as I go and see if there is anything I can do to match the mood more as I continue animating.

Re: August WIP - SEE IF YOU CAN SPOT EM!

Another quick update. I made the cut away from the facial close up sooner to avoid getting only part of a syllable, as well as continuing to work on the hands. I also had him lean into the mic sooner so it lands on the beat better for the close up.

Update: Added more squash and stretch to the face, refined hand animations some more, and exaggerated movements in general.

Re: August WIP - SEE IF YOU CAN SPOT EM!

I really like the extra movement in the hair and face now! I also see some camera movement after he smacks his face on the piano, it's looking so good!
Honestly, the only thing I'm wondering is if he is feeling remorse! I kind of expect his eyebrows to furrow slightly when his voice gets louder as he says "coming up from the BOTTOM" and "SHOT HIM". The intensity of the voice seems to be stronger than the expressions in his face <3
But that's just NITPICKING bro, this is looking amazing!!! <3 I dunno, you asked for feedback! That's literally all I could think of!!! I could just shower you in compliments if you need more feedback ;D

Re: August WIP - SEE IF YOU CAN SPOT EM!

Thank you I really appreciate the kind words!

The expression of how he is singing is something I've been trying to figure out and am not sure how to approach it. Currently I'm thinking he's just concentrating while singing like he's getting into it to hit the notes like a lot of singers do, then at the end he feels remorse before he slams his face down on the keys.

Thank you again and I will keep working on this!

Re: August WIP - SEE IF YOU CAN SPOT EM!

Looks awesome.
I feel like his face could show more emotion, especially in the brow area. It feels a little too relaxed for the intensity of the singing.

Re: August WIP - SEE IF YOU CAN SPOT EM!

I would agree with the brow comment, overall the facial performance is lacking in my opinion right now.  You've got good opportunity here to show some emotion and right it's missing the mark.  The mouth shapes could be far more exaggerated to help with this.  It feels like he stops talking right before his head goes down, I would continue the line in the lip sync.  Nice job overall though...well done!!!

Re: August WIP - SEE IF YOU CAN SPOT EM!

Hmm yeah. I agree I could push the face shapes a bit more but I'm struggling with the right expressions. He sounds confident and almost aggressive in the first part and then goes toward regretful at the very end. To simplify things it's almost like he's frowning/concentrating in the beginning and when the camera cuts at the end, he is regretful. I'm not sure if that will read that well though, doing an expression change during a camera cut. Any ideas are more than welcome!

Another update. I added some more emotion in the face and eyebrows and I think you guys were right it makes a big difference.

It's funny going through and seeing my first post to now and realizing how stiff it was in the beginning. It was mostly the phase of getting the blocking right but I think I realized how little I have been pushing the poses from the start and how important it is to really exaggerate from the beginning.

Feedback always welcome!
