Mery Rig - Pole Vector issue <Solved>

Hello everybody, this is my first post

I have an issue with Mery's legs, I'll run you through what I've done.

So I am blocking out the main poses for my animation, using the mery shelf to select all curves and key all curves.
Everything is going okay, I save the file but when I open it back up there are 2 issues.
1) Mery's eyebrows and trousers (or pants if you are American) are not attached to her body and are assuming poses from a couple of frames back.
2) Mery's legs, or her knees to be more specific, are bending backwards, or to the side.

The weird part is if I move the fk/ik slider slightly the leg pops back in place, then when I scrub the animation the problems happen all over again.

I am relatively new to Maya and I haven't been able to find a solution online. Somebody please help!
Many thanks,
Elliott

Sounds like you're a having a DAG path problem, are you 100% sure you are only animating on control curves?

Hi Kasper, thanks for replying so quickly.
Yeah I'm pretty sure I'm only animating the control curves. The mesh and bones for this rig cannot be selected unless done through the outliner.
How can I check if the DAG path is the problem?

I think I imported the Mery rig into the scene

Re: Mery Rig - Pole Vector issue <Solved>

I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out here,

So I referenced the mery rig into the same scene as the broken rig, tried out a little animation, saved it, loaded it and the new referenced rig (we'll call it Mery v2) seemed to be fine whilst the original rig (mery v1) still had the same issue.

I opened the dope sheet and copied the animation from mery v1 onto mery v2. When I scrubbed through the animation the same issue was happening to mery v2

Im really not sure what is going on here, im going to keep fiddling with it but I may have to just start again sad

Okay, I'm going to bite the bullet and start over. Thank for your help, I will check out some tutorials about setting up a scene. I am familiar with 3ds max so I imagine its similar to setting up a project folder.
Thank you all for your input, if anyone else has this problem and finds a solution, please post it in here to help others who might have the same problem.
I wish to you all, happy and stress-free animating!

Re: Mery Rig - Pole Vector issue <Solved>

The bending backward problem might be caused by maya 2016. Some rigs have this problem with IKs on maya 2016 only. Maya 2016 has a lot of problem in animation. I really recommend staying on 2015. It is much more stable and the "faster playback" supposed to be in 2016 is not at all impressive. It is a bit faster than 2015, but much less reliable and interaction with controller selection and manipulator are slower.

So I set up the scene properly using references and the problem has happened again. Im going to try it on 2015 and see if its any better

If you want to use Mery rig in Maya 2016, change the evaluation mode from parallel to DG.

This stops Mery's jelly legs.

Windows>settings/preferences>preferences>settings/animation>evaluation.

Yup! You are right on. I came across such issues not only with Mery rig but also with Malcolm, Bonnie...  Switching Evaluation mode to legacy DG should fix such problems. Recently I made a video showing just that.

Re: Mery Rig - Pole Vector issue <Solved>

Hey guys,

Switching evaluation mode back to legacy in 2017 fixes Mery's limbs for me too but playback is so slow I can't work with the file. It's an awful, painful way to work.

In parallel mode the elbows and knees break but playback is real-time! The speed difference is incredible.

So my question is, what's actually going on here? What is it about the evaluation that's actually causing this behavior and is there any way to manually change the rig so that it evaluates correctly in parallel mode?

Thanks.

Re: Mery Rig - Pole Vector issue <Solved>

My guess is something changed in Maya's pole vectors.
If you redo the pole vectors in the Mery rig she will work just fine in Paralell mode.

Cheers

Re: Mery Rig - Pole Vector issue <Solved>

I had an issue at my last studio using a Setup Machine rig in Maya 2016. Joints in the arm were behaving strangely. After going through things with their tech support we found that the DAG Editor is very different in 2016. This may be what's affect Mery and the other rigs as well.
