Visceral Games - Gameplay Animator, AnimDirector, Sr Tech Animator

We're working on a Star Wars title directed by Amy Hennig. We are looking for good animators to help with the gameplay team here at Visceral Games in Redwood City as well as in Vancouver.

We're also in search for a good animation director and a senior tech animator here at Visceral Games.

Gameplay Animator - Visceral Games, Star Wars
Visceral Games creates top quality games that push the boundaries of action entertainment. We have over a decade of experience at delivering high-intensity gaming experiences including the Dead Spaces Series and Battlefield Hardline.   We have the stability and backing of a large company combined with the agility and fun culture of small studios and the opportunity to make original IP. We are focused on creativity, polish, and shipping top quality games that millions love as well as building healthy teams and culture. We are currently at work on a new Star wars game, creatively driven by Amy Hennig.

The Visceral Gameplay group is looking for skilled animators to join our  team.  Animators are responsible for portraying movement and behavior. Most often their skill is used to give life to game characters and creatures, but sometimes animations are also applied to objects, scenery, vegetation, environmental effects, and other objects. Animators must be able to create emotionally believable characters that allow game players to interact with the game, whether photorealistic or stylized, in a realistic and believable fashion.

What you will be doing at Visceral:
Animate dynamic, believable and appealing characters for both in-game and cut scene environments.
Take responsibility for an animation or cinematic, seeing it through to completion, in a timely manner to the highest quality possible
Produce 3D animation including both hand–created and mocap cleanup.
Partner with designers, programmers and other personnel involved in the development of products.
Interact with peers or managers in other units/teams/projects and/or vendors.
Participate in the design of our products from concept to completion 

Who you are:
University degree or formal vocational training in Art or Animation is preferred.
4+ years of experience in animation
Minimum 2 years work experience
Experience and proven ability in successfully creating and implementing both key-frame and motion capture animation
Thorough and solid understanding of animation theory and the principles of animation such as timing, weighting, performance and poses
Self-driven, problem-solver and a great team-player
Excellent skills in working with Autodesk’s Maya preferred
Must have strong working knowledge of a 3D animation package (Motionbuilder, XSI etc.)

Portfolio Request:
All portfolios must contain a detailed shot breakdown of the work. It must be very clear what you, the applicant, are responsible for in your reel, screenshots, scanned pictures, web page portfolio, etc. What we will be looking for include:
Examples of various animations applied to humanoid figures and creatures
Examples of gameplay work
Examples of various animations cycles applied to game characters
Examples of motion capture direction and clean-up (before and after)


Visceral is seeking a Technical Animator who can join a project at the earliest stage and make an impact.  You will work with Visceral animators to solve in-game animation challenges, streamline workflow and implement animation in our games. We’re looking for well-rounded innovators who thrive in the dynamic environment that new game creation demands. You will:

Work in our proprietary in-game animation tool to bring our characters to life by designing and building complex motion trees, layering, and blending systems.
Anticipate the needs of the animators to streamline their productivity.
Develop and implement new ideas/technologies/solutions, seeing them to completion
Teach valuable points of information to anyone who may require it
Participate in the critiquing of your work and the work of others
Who you are:
5+ years of experience in a game production environment, on one or more shipped game titles
Experience implementing animation in game engines such as Unreal,  Unity, or other proprietary in-game animation engines
Maya, Motion Builder, MEL Scripting, Python, C# or programming experience
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
Ability to take the responsibility of a large project's workflow
Ability to work within boundaries to creatively solve animation issues
Strong understanding of classic animation principles and fundamentals


What the Animation Director will do at Visceral:
The next great Visceral Animation Director will bring our Visceral’s games to live by directing that team that creates exciting, believable and unique characters, textures, lighting and motions.
Establish and maintained the animation look and feel for Visceral games
Drive the quality of animation at Visceral, balancing performance, quality, continuity, technical, and budgetary requirements
Hire, mentor, guide, and manage an exceptional animation team
Provide daily feedback and direction to the animation team
Collaborate with the Creative  Director,  Art Director, Designers, and Engineers to push the boundaries of what is possible for real-time in game animation
Help evolve the animation pipeline and establish efficient animation procedures
Approve animations for quality and character
Create benchmark animations that serve as quality target for the team.

Who You Are:
It’s undeniable.  You have a great eye.
Additionally, you have 10+ years animation experience with solid experience directing animation for recognized AAA computer game title:
Experience working as part of the senior creative team
Ability to  interpret decisions and to communicate them to the animation staff
Skill at helping the team balance their creative desires with the requirements of the production
Excellent animation credentials on realistic high quality games
Can develop and communicate animation vision in a way that inspires the team and provides clear direction.
An understanding of how to create fluid and responsive character animations
Experience building main character animations from the ground up
Strong people and project manager skills
Experience meeting deadlines and working to a budget
