Re: December Competition Brainstorming Thread

Weird audio.
My idea is a kickboxer / mma fighter just lost, and is now talking to his coach.
But I've got nothing for the "One last thing". I'm not sure whether I want the coach to just start giving him a piece of advice, which would be difficult to understand, or he's actually giving him something. And on that I got 2 options, being serious (he gives him steroids), or funny (he gives him Michael's Secret Stuff).
If you don't understand that reference we can't be friends.
Joking aside, what do you think would be best?
Thanks!

Re: December Competition Brainstorming Thread

I really like the Michaels secret stuff. I think it might be good to even do it on a basketball court, to drive the reference home. But that might be too on the nose. Cool thinking though I love it smile

My main idea right now is...

Open on Shot of Male leaning over railing, on a patio outside a party. You can hear the music from inside the house, you can vaguely see a couple silhouettes dancing inside.  Male 01 (leaning over balcony) holds a red solo cup, with his arms slightly dangling from the rail, he's slouching and has a frustrated look on his face before...

Male 02 walks up from the door of the patio "You can always talk to me". Male 02 leans on the railing joining Male 01.

Male 01 looks up, slightly surprised "Yeah, thank you",  Male01 leans back taking a deep breath looking upwards towards the sky. "And you were right, I still have" Male 01 looks at male 02 "a lot...  to learn"

Male 02 smiles, "Theres one more thing". Male 02 hugs Male 01, who is surprised, pauses and hugs back.

It's kind of an emotional piece, I feel like it fits the atmosphere in the audio

You have to go on the archive.

Sounds good!
The only unclear part for me would be the "lot to learn part". I'm not really sure what he has to learn.

Re: December Competition Brainstorming Thread

SO
the organizes/administration of this site missed the 2016 Dec 1
...............deadLINE & did not provide us with the audio clip by then.
(not the 1st time by the way)
However all members here have to deliver their animations
for each months competition by every month......... deadLINE.
What
does it say about the organizes/administration of this site ?
A fine example of .....
Please, do not tell me I have stepped out of ........LINE here
LOL.
Do not tell me this is not about Dec competition either.
Just an observation & having fun with another side = (organizes/administration)
This post
can be taken off/out is organizes/administration can't take criticism
or
eCritiques (as we say here...lol)
cheers
Ps.
Now I never finish my animation on time I lost ONE day ! ....LOL
Do I write on my 2016 Dec form
please be patient my animation clip is coming SOON ?
Does it mean
that the dead line on 2016 Dec competition is now extended to 2017 Jan 1 ???

Oh well, we just have to take it as an extra challenge big_smile

Speaking of the audio though, I'm going with something along the same line as DonMarks (sounds emotional!) smile

It's the ending scene of a superhero tv episode. The mentor and his apprentice (vampire hunters) have just saved the day and are sitting on the ledge of a tall building as the cityscape opens on the background. The mentor, leaning back "You can always talk to me". The apprentice nods towards his mentor "Yeah, thank you", takes a deep breath "And you were right. I still have... a lot... to learn". Mentor lowers his head, eyes closed "There's one more thing"

I feel like the audio cuts off at an awkward moment. Like the we're about to witness a plottwist or a great revelation, but don't get to see the result.

@ OnlyBatman
Here is a punch line to your kick boxing scenario, I've come with:
Voice 1 he (coach/trainer ) punches/kicks Voice 2 the fighter in the
guts
face
or whatever body part you choose.
This ending has a lot of interesting things going on here:
1.
the SURPRISE ending
2.
You have interesting acting to animate (punching) if you up to it
Voice 2 falling down (acting again)
3.
The facial expression of both characters at that moment of punching.
Perhaps
Voice 1 is
the angry coach which was calm at the beginning of the dialogue
Voice 2 is
surprised & in pain for being hit UNDER THE BELT (sort of speak.) by his trainer
So
there you have a change of characters mood & the surprise ending
for viewers.
.
By the way to all members, this audio provides the surprise ending to
any situation you place your two characters in by saying the last line:
"There’s one more thing…" You figure yourself out. At glance, I believe it can be done.
.
Since it is Dec I do not know if I find the time to animate.
However,
that you would be my advice/contribution/point of view to members for the 2016 Dec audio.
IT is
actually a very clever cut by organizes/administration.
So
I guess it was worthy to wait ONE day for it (despite being late) ........lol.
Congrats to the person who has chosen this audio.
.

JumJum wrote:

Actually,
I think is a great moment to cut as I mentioned above.
btw, I was teasing administration for fun. There are double standards everywhere in real life
nothing new to me, as my friend says: "do as I say, not as I do".
I thought
I would point it out since one member here could not make Nov. competition
& according to him he was cut off in the middle of uploading his clip.
cheers
.
Ps.
I'm not sure if the last action/animation I described here would be judged by
eCritiques in case of winning.
Would it be considered as added time since it would be at the very end
or part of the clip.
I say it is part of the audio surprise CONCLUSION.

Re: December Competition Brainstorming Thread

@ RyanHagen....yes Sir perhaps next year I'm gona try to be an upright citizen like you.
Btw,
thanks for December Competition Brainstorming Thread on time.
.
Now my last post ......on that subject.
Samples of the SURPRISE ending as I said above it could fit any situation:
1.
A teacher & a student conversation
Voice 1 (teacher)
There’s one more thing: ...................... s/he hits the student with a book
(I know it is not politically correct but it makes great action to animate)
2.
A mafia boss & his hit-man
Voice 1 (boss)
There’s one more thing: ...................... The boss shoots the hit-man
3.
The alpha dog/wolf  &  one of the pack dog/wolf
Voice 1 (alpha )
There’s one more thing: ...................... alpha bites the pack dog/wolf
4.
The big rock & the small
Voice 1 (big rock )
There’s one more thing: ...................... The big rock crushes the small one
5.
Two Halloween pumpkins on a porch with big carved teeth talking to each other
Voice 1 (small one  )
There’s one more thing: ...................... YES ! the small one swallows the big one
LOL ........I like that very much, it is prefect for 2D animation.

So
there you have it samples of the SURPRISE endings
animal
mineral
or vegetable
You can used them or come up with your own. I could give you a dozen more
ideas but I would not want to make it easy for you.
Put your thinking cap on
..write script
..............draw thumbnails
.............................do animatic
..................................draw key poses(2d)/blocking in 3d
......................................................................................do rough animation
................................................................................................................match lip sync
...............................................................................................clean it up & colour it/render
do not forget of facial expressions
& background (not necessary but it helps to tell the story)
That's the way I'd do if I had time to finish all.
Now,
if you have your own animation script any other alternative ideas I would
gladly like to see it.
Different points of view that's brainstorming all about.
Thinking outside the box always fascinated me in any field.
cheers

Re: December Competition Brainstorming Thread

after hearing the audio i feel background music and voice tones pushes to a serious kind of talk and acting ,  all i have in mind is a diner or a bar and two guys talking voice 1 is confident and dominating like gang or mafia leader voice 2  younger admitting defeat but he's not happy admitting it .

i'm thinking voice 1 will be franklin by artella and voice 2 will be ray by cgtarian

any thoughts?

Re: December Competition Brainstorming Thread

I can't decide between two options.

1. The first is a guy carrying another, wounded guy, down a hallway that's been shot up. The first line of dialogue is delivered as they are walking. He stops and leans the wounded guy down against a knocked over table. The wounded guy delivers the second line of dialogue. The other guy turns back and delivers the third line of dialogue, before shooting over the table.

2. The first guy is drinking at a bar, and delivers the first line. The camera cuts to a close up of the second guy's face, who delivers the third line. The camera switches back to the first guy who delivers the third line. The camera then pans out to show that the second guy is hanging upside down from the ceiling, and the bar has been messed up, with all the tables, chairs and other furniture knocked around.

.... I don't know which is better. Or, really, if either of them are good.

Re: December Competition Brainstorming Thread

@ ahmadmoh
Yes, most definitely background noises can help establish scene.
It could be a party, a street noise or just music noise to support the action.
I know that many members ignore the b/g noise as the competition is
all about character animation first & for most. However I have seen
many animations here which used sounds effect in the audio very well.
I think you idea is good, both are belong to the same mafia. I think you should show us that .
Perhaps how they dress (mafia colours) or carry guns, knives on the table ect..
Now we are going to wait for amazing acting/animating of your characters.
.
@ dragonlordsd
Okey
First of all
next time to make it clearer I'm going to encourage you & everyone
to quote the line of your character instead saying:"The first line of dialogue"..ect
There are 2(two) reasons behind my request
1st.... it is clearer/easier/unmistakeable what line you are talking about
2nd... perhaps even more important you will get those lines in your
head. The more you breath & live your characters life the better your
understanding & acting of your heroes will be consequently your animation.
All directors encourage & almost demand their life actors
(kind of puppets of directors. yes they are to some degree)
to be a character from the film.
Now
1st option
All is fine until Voice 1 shoots over the table. I personally did not get it why
he did that shooting "over the table" ?
Keep in mind that my surprise endings do not give any explanation why Voice 1
did that at the end. I though it would be fun to end like that & it would create
some action to animate & a shock value to a viewer (make viewers think for a
moment at the end) Ha ha ha.....actually you did that to me at your end here.
I have to admit.
2nd option.
Again I did not make any connection between 2 guys.
What's their relationship to each other ?
Are they drinking mates ?
I have to point out that the dialogue is rather between two close people
by blood, work, or any activity they do together. Looks like they know each other.
They have to have something in common, to talk like that to each other.
Like you showed it in the 1st scenario. (1st cares about 2nd by carrying him)
I understand the mess & hanging was by Voice 1 that is obvious but somehow
I do not see/feel any close connection between those two.
It's just my impression. What other members think ?
cheers

Re: December Competition Brainstorming Thread

@acolors thanks for the advice.. actually this is my first time in 11 sec. club i'm still learning wats goin on here i know wat surprise ending is but its confusing me a little.. is it a plus to end your animation with something u know "hilarious" , i'm thinking comedy can match the overall mood i had this idea close up cams voice 1 has a secret identity as a bar tender and may be he is voice1's mentor or something after saying "there is one more thing" wider camera shows he is pushing the cheque/check towards voice 2 who was frustrated and anticipating to leave while saying "a lot to learn " your mind would think of something more serious but its just that the mysterious bar man wants his money , what do u think?

@dragonlordsd except for the shooting part 1st idea is good for the wounded guy breath pauses in his voice before and after saying "and u r rgiht" and also while saying "a lot to learn" are good chances to show effort and pain while talking i find it very challenging smile , good luck.

Re: December Competition Brainstorming Thread

@ ahmadmoh
"hilarious"... well a lot of telling jokes are based on surprising endings, right ?
Hey,
why don't you test drive your idea by producing an animatic then
show it in the WIP room, see what members think of it.
After all "a picture is worth a thousand words" especially for animators.
Or
even something simpler .... do thumbnails in a progressive sequence with an audio.
I do that all the time. It is like the animatic with pictures or rather simple sketches
of characters but no any character movement.
Just my notes & arrows as well camera angle views, you know perspective views & cuts.
It usually take me 5 min. or less to draw & assemble it.
To visual my idea in progress as well with the provided sound.
About learning, we all do learn. Here is something I heard a while ago:
.
"A man learns throughout his life and still dies stupid "
-----------------
@ dragonlordsd
Here is the ending to your 1st option,
I would suggest
Voice 1 in the middle of his sentence: "There’s one more thing…....."
spots an enemy head rising under the table then he's shooting over the table
I'm not for violence, but there you go. It makes sense why he did NOT FINISH
his line.
Actually some SURPRISING OCCURRENCE (thing, movement) happening
to Voice 1 in the middle of his sentence: "There’s one more thing…....."
it is a very GOOD EXCUSE to end his clip.
That's why Voice 1 is stopped to say any more.
Depends on a situation your character is in, s/he might show some EMOTIONS on her/his face & a body posture
Don't forget that, depends what s/he sees when saying the last unfinished line: "There’s one more thing…....."
There you go !
I really gtg
cheers

and one more thing a man learn through life not to die stupid(maybe u meant ignorance) this i can understand .. salam means peace smile

Re: December Competition Brainstorming Thread

@ ahmadmoh
Who said there was a rush. Not me. I'm just sharing my ideas here.
What you want to do with your idea & how fast you go with it, it is up to you.
After all you are the director of your project.
"A man learns throughout his life and still dies stupid " is a saying I heard once.
How do I put it. To me it means that even we as individual humans learn
our whole life but we cannot acquire all the knowledge, even at the end of our lives.
Perhaps, "stupid" is too strong a word, but this is the way it was passed to me
& I quote that.
Anyway, you said you were learning & I wanted assure that it was not only you,
we all had been learning. But never mind that.
Btw, as I say "don't take me too seriously..."  I'd like to joke a lot, speak my mind
& I like 2d animation which can do impossible as well ridiculous STUNTS.
like this:

Direct Link

.
which 3d animation
nor
life action movies
................................still CANNOT do (that clip is from 1992 movie)
There are more like that but this is a perfect sample of 2d I love.

@ dragonlordsd
Here is another reason  why Voice 1 did NOT FINISH his line
"There’s one more thing…....." He got shot by the enemy. You can do this ending if you want.
So
in conclusion this audio is great because create action at the very end
to animate.
Something's happening to Voice 1 either directly to her/him
or some situation around in the b/g catches her/his eye not letting Voice 1 to finish her/his sentence
automatically making it the SURPRISE ending.
That is what I've got. I'm done here.
Enjoy the above link.
Over and Out

Re: December Competition Brainstorming Thread

@acolors i remember also a saying " give knowledge your all to gain parts " its something like that after translation , actually i see learning a way to survive if u stop learning thats dangerous smile .. thank you for trying to make things look easy and friendly i appreciate that ... and i don't think any animator will argue about traditional animation 2d is king , i think Japanese have better hands now they never gave up on 2d animation .
