Tracking motion in video reference
Hey guys
I'm wondering, how to track the motion of a body part in a video, for example, I want to track the motion of the hips, legs etc. Like this:
This will help me clean up my arcs and it will make it so much easier if I can see what the arc should approximately look like.
Thanks!

Re: Tracking motion in video reference
See that little green x on his hip? That's the key to getting the motion. You film something like that, stick it in After Effects, follow the motion of that x, and it'll build those little dots for you. I don't quite know the specifics, so until someone is more helpful, you can check out Video Co-Pilot. They have excellent, free video tutorials exactly about this kind of thing.

Re: Tracking motion in video reference
I'm sure there's software that can track a conspicuous detail in video, but i did those tracking dots manually using "vector paint" in After Effects"
I paint a dot on the thing I want to track, advance one frame, paint another dot.... it only takes a few minutes and you will learn more about the motion by focusing on it that closely.
At animation Mentor they taught us to use a dry erase marker to put dots DIRECTLY ON THE SCREEN. :0
Don't do that with an LCD monitor, it only works on CRTs. Of course you can't save that, but the more trouble it is to do it the more you notice what's going on.

Re: Tracking motion in video reference
This feature has been removed from CS5 and CS6.
What if I install one of those programs that allows you to 'draw' on your screen - open a quicktime file and use that?
Will the software allow you to hide the annotations or better yet, put them in a layer since you wouldn't want the annotations to constantly be on the screen.

Re: Tracking motion in video reference
I read it's supposed to be back in in CS6. I'd be surprised if there isn't some way to draw a mark on the screen somehow.
I thought Maya had paint effects. You could import some video as a background plate and paint on it or some transparent layer in front of it? I don't use it anymore so i don't' know, but I recall there was a paint capability in it.
There's probably 100 ways to do it with other software too. And check out Camaro's leads, they probably have something too.

Re: Tracking motion in video reference
Apparently, it got stuck in the conversion for 64 bit and never made it into CS5 and it didn't even make it in CS6. There is a brushes panel in CS6 but its grayed out or some reason.
I'll try installing CS4.

Re: Tracking motion in video reference
There's a great program called Kinovea that can do something similar. It was originally for sport analysis but animators started using it so the creator is building in more animation centric tools into it. It's not perfect but it does a great job at tracking motion and you can manually track points too.

Re: Tracking motion in video reference
Yeah, I checked that out but the marks fade away.
Anyway, I've installed CS4.

Re: Tracking motion in video reference
fading is just a preference, you can set it not to by going to Options > Preferences > Drawings > Persistence > and tick the Always visible tickbox
