MC 33: Track and Field
Hello guys and gals,
This mini-challenge is inspired by the Olympic games. With the opening ceremony only weeks away, its time for your character to step up and prove you have what it takes to go the distance and lift the gold medal!
We wish to see clips of your character training for the Olympic games. At our Mini Challenges try-outs, we are excepting competitors of all shapes and sizes. There is no physical restrictions for your own Olympic athlete. We invite you to think out the box. What makes your athlete so special? He could be as strong as the mighty Hercules or Obelix, or maybe a little clumsy like Goofy in Disney's 1942 short 'The Olympic Champ!'.
As always the animation could be anywhere between 75-125 frames. If you have any questions about submission requirements, please check How-to-participate section for more details. To provide more time to create, the Mini-challenges will now be run on a monthly basis. The deadline will be Monday 30th July 2012. Good luck and happy animating!

Among others, I know of Morpheus and Eleven being editable enough to make them small and fat

Re: MC 33: Track and Field
Hi guys, spent a few hours on this the other day but annoyingly have breached the time limit by about 15 frames. I like how it's going but it seems a little fast for something involving a heavy weight, what do you think?

Re: MC 33: Track and Field
@Dance_Commander It looks about right. You could probably speed up the weight going onto his chest for variety in timing so you have more time of him pushing up on the weight bar. I dunno you may have to play with the timing a little bit but overall it looks great! Keep it up!
Alright, here's my shot. I'm animating a shot of someone doing a discuss throw.

Re: MC 33: Track and Field
hey patob215. Looking good buddy. I really think your poses need to be pushed. By this I mean, consider what the body is doing and ensure this area is pushed for clarity.
Look at your drawings also just of your pelvis area (which you have represented as a ball). You have your poses mapped out, you know how far you want your man to travel. So work on a layer involving just this ball. It may provide ideas for settles, weight shifts etc.
@ Dance_Commander, there is no strict time limit. Its a recommendation which we strongly advise sticking working within so that you can focus on the more on the movements. Sometimes when people try to animate a long 11 Second clip, the amount of movement can be overwhelming.
With regard to your piece, have you shot video reference? You may not need a weight for this, just a pole and two piles of books. With this I'd advise looking into the hand poses. Look into the arcs that the hands are rotating. Also look at the rotation of the head at the end. Where this this movement begin? It will certainly affect more of the body.
Again its a matter of tweaking what you have. For instance, when he takes the first step, is that weight shifted sufficiently onto the standing leg?

Re: MC 33: Track and Field
Patob215 i think it looks good, smooth. But I agree with littlepenguin I need to feel it more. I didn't see your character let go of the discus, and i bet you could get some good stretch on it! Just before he lets go let the discus hang back, and then Wham! It snaps out of his hand. Just a suggestion!

really like it mayalina!!
The only thing is the payoff feels a little week...you just gets knocked back a couple of feet. I would have it shoot him all the way up in the air...off screen...then hold for a bit and have him fall back and slam down on the ground

Re: MC 33: Track and Field
Hello geekbot,
I think the issues I have at present is clarity with the idea in the work. There are parts that I am not sure what is going on. These include the poses when he when the pole is in a ) shape. I can understand the concept that he is too heavy, but the arm swinging... Whether its timing or posing, the idea needs more definition.
Also, the pole used to vault is taller than the height beam. So how does it pass through the gap after being fully erected?
P.s. Love your reel by the way. I have been a fan of your hunter shot since it first appeared in the AM showreel.

Re: MC 33: Track and Field
Hey Guys,
Sorry for bringing this topic up again since the mini challenge is over and done with but I want to show my final version of my discuss throw animation that I've done on and off for a couple of months. I would like to hear your thoughts on it don't know whether or not I am going to make any changes to it depending on the feedback I get but we'll see.
Thanks a bunch.
