Wrist feeling stiff

Hey guys

After watching Kenny's video on ergonomics and tablets, my wrist has been feeling stiff after working with Maya, it subsides after a few hours but my left wrist (non-dominant hand) feels looser than my right wrist (dominant hand).

Should I take notice?

Re: Wrist feeling stiff

Are you using a wacom? Make SURE you are not grounding out your arm.  Do not bend your wrist if you can.  Also, imagine there is an axis that runs down your humerus, try to not rotate your shoulder on that axis, but use your shoulder as much as possible with a steady wrist and relaxed elbow.

I was going to announce this in a few days, but I'm doing a free webcast on kennyroy.com next week, bringing in a physical therapist to talk about proper ergo, exercises and stretches for animators!  Be sure to come by!

That's awesome Kenny!  I worry about ergonomics all the time at work, your video was extremely helpful.  I'll try to attend for sure smile

Re: Wrist feeling stiff

Yeah I do various wrist stretches often.  I also got myself some boading medicine balls (the chinese kind that you twirl in your hand) to help strengthen my wrist and hand and increase dexterity.  Plus it's relaxing and good for your chi wink

But yeah, i would look up proper ergo when working on a computer.  A small adjustment can go a long way.

Unfortunately, I'm using a mouse but I'll try to get a tablet as soon as possible.

I can heartily encourage you to do that. But isn't it funny how you notice stuff like this especially if someone reminds you of it? big_smile
After years of using a mouse without having any troubles I now noticed that my wrist is getting stiff as well, probably because I quit smoking and am now slowly able to focus more on my work, so not standing up from my desk as often anymore. But getting used to using a tablet might take a few days, so make sure you don't have any urgent jobs to do while switching over.

Re: Wrist feeling stiff

Yeah, I noticed it more after watching the video. I'm nearly in my final year at university so a tablet might be a worthwhile investment. I want a Wacom Insuro 5, if only they weren't so darn expensive!

Re: Wrist feeling stiff

Well, it maybe a bit expensive, but you need to think of it as a long term investment. I'ts like buying a house almost, by that I mean, it's not something you're going to ditch in 2 months. You are going to keep it for years and years and you can still sell it back. So think of it as a long term investment which is for your health so it's really important.

Edit :

I just take a look at the wacom store and you know, you don't necesserely need an intuos 5 you can still buy an intuos 4 wich are cheaper and not super far away from the intuos 5 wich wasn't a super-mega revolution, really. (As far as I know anyway).

Re: Wrist feeling stiff

Yea the 4 is really great already! But I think if you're just going to use it as a replacement for the mouse, a larger sized Bamboo might do the trick, too. If you plan on doing some painterly stuff, an intuos is inevitable, though.

Matt, I'm wondering what this link is supposed to do. If I wouldn't know you're a real member of this forum, I'd probably deleted this post as spam.

Re: Wrist feeling stiff

I guess I'm like the only person in the world who don't use my wrist as much when using the mouse. I move the mouse more so with my fingers. Obviously I move my wrist at times sometimes but its at a very minimum. I just naturally move the mouse with my fingers. I thought that was how everybody used a mouse until I went to college and had friends who wrist were messing with them. Mines havent acted up yet even when I spend hours on the computer. Either because its how I use my mouse or because I exercise daily as well too. I have more problems with my back then I do my wrist when on the computer! Sitting down all day is tedious on the back! Take breaks but not so much that it interferes with workflow

Re: Wrist feeling stiff

I'm getting a stiff wrist as wel even though I use a Wacom. It especially happens when it's very stressfull at work. Last week I installed an anti RSI software which forces me to take a 15 sec break every ten minutes and 5 minute break every hour. This seems to work for me because it reminds me about my posture and prevents me from cramping up for two hours. A wacom is definitely a good investmen though.

Re: Wrist feeling stiff

I will say right now that an Intuos 4 or 5 is worth it over any other tablet for the customizable hotkeys.
Even though I rarely use mine, it's more than paid off for the few moments when my keyboard hand starts cramping up as well.

Re: Wrist feeling stiff

@Kyle, this link only directs me to the global wacom site, but what bother me more is that the link is hidden behind a google redirect. People usually only do that if they either want to see how many people click on the link or hide the site they were linking to. I'm just getting a bit itchy around these kind of links big_smile

@aj, I have been thinking along the same lines for a long time now, but just recently, I noticed my wrist going stiff as well, I think if you start scrubbing a lot, it doesn't matter much if you use your fingers to operate the mouse (like I do too) or the whole hand. But that's just a guess smile

Re: Wrist feeling stiff

I'll try getting one by the end of the year, I'll just have to accept that its an expensive product. £200 would have been a great price but they sell for 250-260.

Idk, I can understand matt painters and zbrush sculptors getting wrist problems, maybe modelers too but I don't understand why animators get them. I don't do dramatic, whole 180 degrees side to side hand/wrist movements with my hand/wrist when animating. Just a slight push with my fingers and the mouse cursor is already half way across the computer screen (mouse cursor set to sensitive) so when animating theres no need for me to do dramatic movements. Idk, could be just how I work. Then again, I havent been able to land that awesome work 23 hrs per day, 7 days a week job yet neither so maybe that plays a role

As far as I understood, this problem with the wrists stems from having the mouse button pressed continuously over a longish period while moving the mouse around (like, when scrubbing in the timeline, for example) and thus creating a strain in a position that is unnatural for your hand.
So, this can happen to animators as well, probably not during blocking but definitely in the polishing phase. But if you're not experiencing any troubles, so much the better! smile

ah ok makes sense. I did hear the wacom does provide relief. I know some people who loves it compared to the mouse. I didnt take the time to get used to it yet for animating. I like my middle mouse button! But wouldnt the pen eventually give u carpal tunnel in the hand/pinkie area?

Re: Wrist feeling stiff

http://www.wacom.eu/int/use-it/ergonomi … ort_en.pdf

Note that this PDF is available in all of the other language of the wacom site under (in English) In-Use/Ergonomics in the right rectangle under Downloads.

Edit : The point is not that a tablet will get completely ride of the rsi problem for ever but at least it will slow down the process A LOT. You may end up with some problem after 50 years of working on a computer with a tablet, but that's tens of years later than by using a mouse and that's because the muscular stress needed to use a tablet is much lower than for a mouse and involve more parts of your body so the muscular tension is better distributed and not only on one particular area (like a finger or the wrist) wich diminish the risks of injury.
