June WIP - Batman and Joker
hey guys!
doin' a batman and joker theme this month...had some fun modifying some rigs into batman and joker...in case anyone is wondering, its a modified skyscraper and scarecrow from ianimate...if you want to use the rigs you have to have enrolled in the school at some point.
here's where i am at so far...comments and feedback are appreciated!

Brilliant use of the sound effects in the background! Absolutely brilliant.
Bravo, good sir.

Wow. As JKR said you REALLY made use of the clinking background noises in this one. Those modifications look fantastic too. You should email them to iAnimate to see if they'd be interested including them in their rig downloads. I know I'd use the Batman one for sure!
Awesome stuff

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
Very nice, great mods of the rigs (hoping to see Skys face in a reaction shot). One thing I can think of is that the hand gesture on 'two' seems a little soft, maybe it could hit a little harder and swing down again in an arc? I guess you don't want everything to have the same intensity though so it's a tough call.
Cheers,
Brian

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
thanks for the feedback guys!
I think I may have made a composition error by having both characters backs facing to begin...I'm thinking about putting batman in a rotating chair or something so that he can start partially rotated to camera and we can see his face for a moment.
also...I'm going to just remove the "two-finger" pose and do something else instead because it is just too literal and he should be acting a bit more dramatically i think.
...i will post an update once i make some changes.
oh and wellings...i'm not at ianimate anymore, but that skyscraper college jock mod is one of my mods...Jason Ryan straight up asked me for it to share with the community, so i gave it to him...I would give the school these mods if I could get my hands on some of the new rigs I don't have access to anymore in return. ![]()
thanks again!

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
You could also try keeping Joker in that position but starting him out barely peering evilly back over his shoulder before turning to his device. Dunno, might be a lot less work. ![]()

Very keen ear, you made me realize the voice sounds like Mark Hamill on the 90's Batman cartoon series. great stuff!

Heymikey - I'd ask him about it. He might very well be willing to let you have access to a rig in return for one of these mods. Worth a shot right?

hey guys, thanks for the feedback!
here's an update with some changes...including putting batman on a rotating/rising chair to show his front a bit in the beginning. also changed joker's boring "2 finger" pose into a different hand gesture...along with some other tweaks.
any comments are appreciated!

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
Everything is looking great. The only thing that bugs me for some reason is the way Batman turns on that chair. Maybe it's because I've seen the previous version and I know what you're trying to do so I'm not looking at it objectively. For some reason it doesn't look like he's on a rotating chair though. It looks like he's forcing the chair to rotate himself, which he might be, but I think it would be nicer if we got the sense that the chair was rotating and he had no control...if you know what I mean. Looks awesome though. And that Batman mod is so great. Even the face looks like Batman!!

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
I didnt see it as a chair! thought of it more as some contraption thats rising and spinning on the floor. if that makes sense? as if it was on a rotating platform

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
I agree with wellings it looks really good but the chair just doesn't look right. Maybe if it turns a bit faster and stops more abruptly. The models just great though they really do look like batman and joker.

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
Hey guys...made some updates.
I tried to make the rising chair/platform seem more obvious...and I made batman knocked out and coming to so that it would seem less like batman was powering the movement and more like the platform is rotating/rising.
Any commentary is appreciated.

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
It's looking absolutely great.
I too had the same feelings as some with the chair.
Perhaps using the rope to your advantage? - Batman's been tied up. So it's possible that the rope could be extended to the ceiling making him dangle like a piñata... (as many would see hero's dangling over a pool of sharks)
I just think that will allow you to mess around a little more with the timing/easing of the turn and give you a chance to add a little motion/sway on Batman.
Hopefully that makes sense!

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
oy...I'm thinking this rotating chair thing isn't sitting well with people...Its a tough situation...I might just go back to having Batman stationary like he was originally...I like the shot, but if I feel people aren't liking that aspect of it, I might just ditch the shot and do a new one.

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
I think it works quite well with this latest one, making him look knocked out makes it more apparent that it's the chair moving :]

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
Really good shot!
Im not really an expert on this but i'll try to help.
I agree with leecornall on having the chair stop abruptly. I think it would give the mechanical feeling to it. Also it calls for a fast overshoot on the neck up because of the overlap which adds a nice texture.
When he does his side step before the line "To men enter..." and the final step before "One man leaves", I feel the torso and the arms (esp from the shoulder to the elbow) are moving as a single unit. I think it will be more appealing to overlap the arms, just a bit.

3d animation is worth
about two million words a minute...

I would pull the antenna on "NOW", to hit that accent higher. Keep working on it, you're doing a great job ;D
I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code.

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
The last two pauses don't feel completely natural, I can't exactly put my finger on what the problem is, but maybe someone else can elaborate. I think it might be because the way it is now, the character is waiting to speak, instead of having an actual reason behind it (sifting thoughts for example). I think the spaces just need to be filled up a bit more, needs to be more fluent.
Not the most solid peace of feedback, I know, but Something is bothering me about it.
Overall absolutely great work though!! Love it

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
hey guys...i think i solved the issue...
i went back to the original idea with batman stationary and facing away, but this time i kept joker turned to camera more so that his face is visible at the start...i don't know why i went through that whole rotating chair thing when i could have just done this. I also have batman give a mean glare to joker at the end...I like how you never really see batman's face...it keeps him mysterious ![]()
I'm honestly pretty happy with it at this stage, but we have some time left, so comments and feedback are welcome!

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
It's kind of a silly change, and not really animation based, but if you upgraded the box/detonator that the Joker is holding with a little more pizazz I bet it would make it shine even more. Just a thought! Nice job.

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
I much prefer this heymikey, great job! There is ONE part that I noticed though. When Joker says "Now" his hands and the device move rather awkwardly and abrupt. I know that his torso and head snap up when he says it, but I feel like his hands shouldn't. I would either make that move more subtle, or even see if a slight opposing action works. It just feels a little jerky in that part. Other than that it looks really good ![]()

Re: June WIP - Batman and Joker
thanks for the great comments guys! it really helped a lot! i considered fancying up the detonator like JKR said, but in the end i want it to be as simple and obvious as possible...as long as its clear that its a detonator, i'm happy ![]()
here's the current version...
