Animation Mentor vs. ianimate

Hey ive been wondering about which school would be better to go to, though technically ianimate inst a school (which I like). Ive read a few comparisons between the two and ianimate is starting to become a more attractive choice to me. They both look like great places to learn animation, but I would like a little more insight. I'm also starting to wonder, I see quite a few graduating students from AM going to some of the top studios, however I'm not sure whats happening to students at ianimate. I know it really all depends on one's skill and dedication, but does anyone know if some ianimate students are also getting hired by top studios too? Im sure some do, but I never hear anything about them. If anyone has any info, I'd like to know. NO BIAS please:) thanks!

Re: Animation Mentor vs. ianimate

You may or may not have seen Rastko's comparison. He claims it's biased but every last word is true. I'd recommend iAnimate over AM any day of the week.

Rastko got hired, but I forgot which studio. I believe Angelo Sta. Catalina (Dance3d on here) got hired at Blue Sky. Another student got hired at Disney (he came from AM). Granted this is all before they technically even graduated. That's 3 of the 8 students that I know of out of the first graduating class. The student reels speak for themselves; I'm totally an iA snob now, but honestly I think the work coming out of iA is really good. I don't really want to compare the work to AM's work, because they have some fantastic animators too. My favorite part about how Jason set it up is that it's a pass/fail system. Unlike AM, you don't get arbitrary grades; you're either good enough to move on (good enough for feature animation) or you're not.

Re: Animation Mentor vs. ianimate

wow that was fast! thanks for letting me know! oh and when you said, he came from AM, did you mean coming from AM to ianimate? yeah, Im definitely starting to look into ianimate a lot more now, I really do like there methods quite a bit. Oh and also, anybody ever heard an ianimate student reaching all the way to Pixar? Just curious since its the hardest to get into

Re: Animation Mentor vs. ianimate

Yeah, Daniel Klug, graduated from AM and everything, then went to iAnimate for like the last two workshops I think, and just got hired at Disney.

As for Pixar? Not that I know of. There's only been that one graduating class and all. But hey, any job placement is good job placement. I have a feeling once the alumni go to Dreamworks for graduation (they put their demo reels on the studio screen!), they'll have a good chance of finding something.

Angelo got hired at BlueSky? Doesn't surprise me in the least big_smile
For more experienced Animators, iAnimate is a good way to go since there you don't have to go through the basics anymore, but can start where your current skill level is.
Since my next job probably won't happen, I think I'm actually going to have enough time to start at least one iAnimate Workshop next round, so looking forward to that!

Re: Animation Mentor vs. ianimate

hmm, so are you saying its a bad idea to join ianimate if you don't have too much experience? or does that all really depend on how fast you catch on? cause I believe Rastko only took like two classes at AM before ianimate? right? Ive already had the basics down for awhile so..

Re: Animation Mentor vs. ianimate

No I think that the iAnimate workshop 1 is just as basic as it can get, if you would consider their program on the website.

Re: Animation Mentor vs. ianimate

If you're late with an assignment you miss the critique, which is the main point of being there, so I wouldn't take it on if you can't invest a decent amount of time to it.

Re: Animation Mentor vs. ianimate

Please also keep in mind that finishing something within a set deadline is one of the key skills you need to have when you work as animator. If you can animate like Milt Kahl but can't finish your shot in time, you wont get far in this industry, unfortunately.

Re: Animation Mentor vs. ianimate

Both are great programs. iAnimate is a little more casual, Anim Mentor is more structured. I would recommend AM to brand new animators any day of the week. iAnimate is a little more convenient for people already working in the industry that just want to upgrade.

Or if you have a family and a fulltime job, iAnimate offers you a little more flexibility around completing your assignments.

With both schools (and AnimSchool) success depends on the student.

Re: Animation Mentor vs. ianimate

I can only speak from my experience, but aside from some relatively unsuccessful attempts at self teaching, I was brand new animator (my 11SC entries were by far my best work pre-iAnimate). I've grown a lot over the past 4 and a bit workshops, having started in Workshop 1. That is due in equal parts to iAnimates wonderful structure, instructors and community, and to my desire to get better, and squeeze every available hour out of the thing.

I can't speak for other courses as I have no experience of them, but i'd recommend iAnimate to anyone between new-comer to master.

I can vouch for Martyn, he has some fantastic work coming out of the school.

Re: Animation Mentor vs. ianimate

I'm two weeks into Workshop 3 with iAnimate, this is the first one I've done. I'm having an absolute blast and learning a lot, highly recommended. I have no experience with AM so can't compare, but our mentor has encouraged us to email her during the week if we have questions or need notes which is really great. I'm not sure if all iA mentors do this, but I know at least a few of them do. As well as getting our own critiques live we are free to watch the recordings from any of the other mentors too, which means we can get lots of different perspectives.

Overall, you could say I'm a big fan of iAnimate smile

Cheers,
Brian

Re: Animation Mentor vs. ianimate

Ok, so I applied to iA for the game division. First class of it is starting in May. Hopefully I get in.

But what I'm wondering, is AM still only recorded crits? When iAnimate first came out, the 2 hour video explaining it with Jason Ryan, he said that iA does live crits, and AM does recorded crits, which is the main reason I think I like iA better. Now with the games division, it was super easy for me to apply, especially since they`ll have character / creature rigs specifically for games, which is awesome. I like game rigs much more than feature rigs. So I've already applied, but I just curious of AM stepped it up and is doing live crits now or not.

Anyone know?

Re: Animation Mentor vs. ianimate

I am AM class 3 student but I am on leave of Absence. I will be back to school at the end of June for my class 4 training. AM is still offering the recorded video for critiques. Unfortunately, i got some critiques videos without visual, audio or missing part videos. I sent the notes to my mentor. But they had responded me after 2 or 3 days.(somehow i had to send a remind notes to them) Although this did not always happen but this would slow down my processing. This is why i like the live critiques idea of iaminate. And then the students can download it because this is recorded. But in AM, we can't download or record it!
