JK - "You Look, You FEEL" 2D Animation: Keys

Latest:

Direct Link

Original Post:
Hooray! New month, new audio clip, and I really like this one. It's got a nice range of emotions, so that's what I'm going to focus on along with posing. As such I'm planning to use very simple characters so I can spend less time designing them and getting comfortable and more time with the meat and potatoes.

Here are some of my early sketches, and I'll be sure to add more to this thread as it's produced.

http://www.fredthemonkey.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/earlyConcepts.png

Thoughts and comments are always welcome! But I know it's still early and that makes suggesting things tough.

(PS. I'm aware one character is sitting, Mr. Roy. smile I'm hoping to balance his nonchalant posing with much more dynamic stuff from Character 1, who is standing albeit slightly obscured by the desk. I'm going to keep trying different compositions, this is just the earliest brainstorm for idea's sake. As I said, open to suggestions!)

Ha you've seen me trolling the WIP forum smile

This looks very balanced in terms of the pose choices you're giving yourself.  Have at it !

great sketches man.
...i think you're prepared, just watch you don't twin the hands on every pose...that will get picked on.
good luck and keep having fun!

Re: JK - "You Look, You FEEL" 2D Animation: Keys

Thanks for all the support guys! heymikey, I'll do my best to keep things non-twinned. It keeps sneaking back in on its own, ha ha. The good news is unlike last month I'm going to do at least three or four of each pose to try and build the best one before moving to animation stage.

Here are some layout compositions I did yesterday, and I'd love to hear thoughts. I'm enjoying learning layout, but I'm still a novice at it so let me know any suggestions! (Including what DOESN'T work about any of them, so I know for future.) big_smile

Although you might already know most of it, I found this extremely awesome pdf of a talk Mark Kennedy did on staging at calarts some years ago, which might be very useful for your planning process:

Re: JK - "You Look, You FEEL" 2D Animation: Keys

A terrific resource! I have, in fact, printed it out and bound it into a personal coil-bound book that I keep on my desk at all times. It's coupled with the SB info by Sherm Cohen on Spongebob, the Glen Keane lecture notes that float around online, and Brad Bird on how to compose shots. Also the last few pages are printouts of Kenny Roy's How to Stay Motivated articles. smile

I try to read through all the stuff in that collection at least once a month for reminders. I think it's one reason I even attempted the upshot "e" above. Before I'd never have even considered it. (It was actually the first time I've ever drawn something from that angle, and I really like how it turned out! It might be a pain in the butt to animate to, though...)

Re: JK - "You Look, You FEEL" 2D Animation: Keys

A very good idea, such a book. I just came across this again yesterday when I was trying to teach some students the art of storyboarding big_smile or rather what to keep an eye out on. It was actually your 'e' drawing which reminded me of that big_smile
As for your drawings, I'd scrap 'f', that's too boring with a lot of straight lines and all action on the same level. Same with 'a' (except for the action on the same level)
I would have gone for 'e' actually, since it has the most interesting composition, and I love how you still have their eye lines on the same level in spite of the upshot camera. But if you say this is going to be tough perspective wise, you might not want to attempt that, since this would slow you down quite much, wouldn't it?
leaves us with 'b', 'c' and 'd', which is pretty much the same, only once mirrored and once a bit wider shot. Couldn't say which one I would prefer of that, I'd just maybe cut to a close up on the standing characters face when he's getting all worked up to show his emotions better.
One thing I just realized that in drawing 'b' the charaters are facing each other, are somewhat connected, whereas in 'c' and 'd' the sitting guy has his back turned towards the other guy, thus is a bit disconnected from him. (I only realized this because I've just recently watched Keith Lango's awesome vts on staging)
Considering the audio, this leaves us with c or d while I'd prefer d since this is a bit closer on the faces, but that's just personal preference. big_smile

Wow, thanks! Super in-depth and you've now given me a ton to think about, ha ha.

Sure is tempting to say "Screw it" and pick e! What a struggle... Do I go the easier route and really try to polish a few aspects? Or do I dive in head first to the difficult path hoping it all works out? smile

Lots to think about...

I think you should do what you want to, and if 'e' is the way you'd like to go, then go for it! I gather you're experienced enough to evaluate if you're able to finish it that way smile

Re: JK - "You Look, You FEEL" 2D Animation: Keys

Nice looking comps, each thumbnail works on its own I think.  However for the sake of this competition, I'll tell you what I tell everyone else; keep it simple.  I'm not a big fan of multiple cuts in this contest because it takes up a lot of time and isn't nessesary.  Cuts are used as a way to move a story forward, or to show a specific emotion.  Same goes for the types of shots used.  Everyone is telling you to use the "e" shot, however I would say that's the last one you should consider using because there's no need for an up shot there, I mean we're not trying to show how tall he is right?  Plus with that shot the main guy is being blocked by the desk, how can we see his full body expressions if he's hidden?  Don't get me wrong it's an interesting shot and drawn well, but for the sake of the story and this contest I wouldn't recommend it.  For me the best ones to use are either "b", "d", or "f" because those show more clearly both characters oh and don't crowd your shots with a lot of bg and foreground elements, give your characters "breathing" room to act.

This months entry has a lot of great chances for some interning and powerful emotions/expressions so keeping the staging as clear as possible is a must.  I like how you're also going for more simple character designs but don't make them too plain, appeal is a big part of it also.  Things to keep in mind are the eyes, mouth, and hands because these will show the most emotion.  Keep it up!

Re: JK - "You Look, You FEEL" 2D Animation: Keys

I agree, Dane. 9 Seconds is no time to use lots of cuts (or swaying cameras, for the most part).

I think I liked 'e' so much because it's automatically visually interesting. You're right, though. For animation sake it doesn't give the main character much room to act. When you straight compare him in that shot to the others, 80% of him is hidden.

Regarding your appeal comment, could you possibly elaborate a little more? I must admit I've always been fascinated by appeal, but truthfully there just aren't many resources dealing with it. Normally in books it's just off-handed comments of "Appeal is very important, moving on..."

Your work on your site is very appealing, as is the chicken character you drew up last month to show me as an example. I know some folks seem to have a natural sense of it. I'm still working on it. Is there anything in particular you can recommend to bring that appeal front and center, even keeping things simple? I appreciate the thoughts on it from someone with your high skill level.

I am going to spend some time Monday tweaking a few of the composition tests to see if I can find the right balance. I had planned to do more anyway, and thanks to everyone's feedback I think I have a better idea of the direction to continue. Thanks everybody! More soon...

Alright, I've got my first animatic based on the thumbnails I did. Obviously still early, but trying to flesh out my main poses and performance. I did two sets, so I'll have another different version with different poses shortly. Then people can chime in on which ones they think work best.

hey man this is goin great...it will be a good month for you. i think you are going in the right direction...the timing of the first few poses is tough to read currently...i'm trying to imagine how they should connect. it will be key to get those minor head shakes in there to show him thinking and feeling disapproval for the other guy...overall i like the acting choices. keep fleshing it out.
enjoy!

Re: JK - "You Look, You FEEL" 2D Animation: Keys

Nice one JKR, the only comment I have is that for some reason the last pose bothered me. I think you can make it more appealing by tilting that guys head towards and downward. / That way making it more angry also it will have more change from the previous pose. In fact looking at it again I'd slant the whole body more taking it over by about 5mm to the right
and sharpening the Triangle pose you got smile  right now it's got equal weight left and right /\ where it could be stronger like this /|.
I hope that made some sense.
You have a great start here, keep on keepin' on.

I think I sort of get what you're saying, but it's still not 100% clear. Any chance you could do a quick drawing of what you mean and post it for me? If you're too busy I understand. It would help me out, though, because I've always been a more visual learner and it will make what you're saying crystal clear. In the meantime I'll keep trying to tweak that pose. smile

EDIT: Do you mean more like the last pose in the first test I did (top post, right side of the paper)?

Animatic #2: Different poses. Let me know what you think between the two, which is better, and if there are any poses from one that you feel might work well in the other instead!

Then I can get to real animating. Sweeeeeet.

Re: JK - "You Look, You FEEL" 2D Animation: Keys

hey man, one idea...when he says "you look, you feel"....you currently have the poses leaning opposite directions and then the final "listening to me" is leaning the same direction as on "feel"....instead maybe have the poses progress from left to right so that he ends up leaning far right on the last beat only to further emphasize his intensity there. make sense?
hope it helps man, keep goin!

Re: JK - "You Look, You FEEL" 2D Animation: Keys

Same as adib, I liked the first version better as well. It seemed to me that the way the hands moved in it were a lot more interesting and fit the dialogue better... In the second version its (in my opinion) as though there is a divider split down the center of his body; when he uses his right hand the left is inactive, and when he uses his left hand, his right is inactive. And whenever he uses them both their positions seem to be kind of symmetrical, so it lacks the sort of dynamic effect .  (Granted there are a few exceptions to this, but it just stood out to me. Then again I'm kinda new at animation so it could be nothing at all.)
