3yr Degree or 4 Yrs????

Ok now Im presently enrolled in a 3 year B.Sc. degree program in Animation and Multimedia here in India(Birla Institute Of Technology Noida). And I have one more year to go but at present it has become optional for us to switch over to a 4 year B.A. in animation at the same institute. Which means 2 more years for me. So I am a little confused so as what to do. Do you guys have any suggestions???

I know Animation is all about being creative and these degrees wont do me much good but still I've heard you have a broader scope if you own a degree so please help me..

It depends if you think that you'll learn what you need in those years. Also, if it's a bachelor degree then it might be easier to get into other countries. That's always an advantage but I think real life experience is much better if you could chose. Four years in school is kind of long and i'd only do it myself if it was for a bachelor/PhD degree. smile

Re: 3yr Degree or 4 Yrs????

I think it will depend a lot on how things work in India, and I can't speak to that being from the US. I will say on a personal note that I think it's in your best interest to do whatever will help you grow as an animator/artist/person the most. We get caught up in things like what it says on our diplomas, but life is about much more. Learn, experience, and grow, and try to put yourself in the places that those things will happen in the best way. If it's two more years of school, go for it. If it's getting out into the workplace, do it. Heck, if it's not going to school OR work and just apprenticing under a master then that's the way to go.

Concern yourself first and foremost on self improvement, especially in the early stages of your career. Good luck!

Re: 3yr Degree or 4 Yrs????

the B.A. will give you the option of teaching later if that's what you wanna do. But, if you find you arent learning anything at school, and its more just you get an assignment and you do it. Not learning new techniques and such, I would say finish the 3rd year and just do it on your own. Why spend the extra cash if you could be finidng a job / working on projects you want to work on.

Just do it man! having a degree in any subject is good.If you are young, go for it.2 years is bit long, but you will get plenty of time for practicing and improving your animation skills. Best of luck smile

Re: 3yr Degree or 4 Yrs????

I think animation is a field where you learn the most on the job! To me the advantage, apart from earning a degree, when you're a student is the freedom you get to do anything you want. There are no bosses. And sometimes that works wonders (look at all the brilliant student films). But I still think what you learn in your student days is just the tip of the iceberg. And as far as degrees/diplomas are concerned, I don't think they matter much when you have to appear for a job. But you're right, it does help in some cases when you wanna work in a foreign country.

So it's a two way road, and I can't really advise you what you should do. I can only say you should decide your priorities. If you're young, I guess you can spend 2 more years. But don't do it just for the degree. Make it worth the while! But if time is not on your side, you should try to get into a studio and earn production experience as fast as possible. Because more than the degree, it's the demo reel that counts!

When I was doing my one year animation specialization in Takshaa, I had the option of extending a semester and making a short film. It came with a foreign degree too. But since my age was catching up with me, I had to let it go and search for a job instead. I think it's pretty much worked for me! And of course I had meanwhile also done a distance learning 3 year degree program of the Bachelor of Fine Arts on the side. smile

You will learn more in your first 6 months on the job than you did in your entire 4 years of school. Lets put it that way.

I learned more at work in my 4 month internship than I ever did at the school for the other year. smile But when it comes to get into countries sometimes a serious degree count more than just a year or so of experience (unless you're really good..) It all comes down to if you want to study that long or make money while trying to get better.

My opinion, what's the rush to jump into the industry?  School is fun!
