First Demo Reel! Advice Needed!

Hey guys!

I've been working on my first demo reel and piling up all the seemingly best stuff I've made in the past year. I've never really made a demo reel, and I'm completely self taught, so I don't really know much of the “Do's and Don't's" . This is not a final version, I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice on how this looks so far. I'd really appreciate it if you could be as honest and brutal as possible, I'm here to learn smile

If it's relevant, I am currently in Montreal, so this reel will most likely be sent out mostly to the gaming industry. Are there maybe specific things I should add or take out to get their attention?

Thanks to everyone who replies, I really appreciate it!

Re: First Demo Reel! Advice Needed!

You are completely self taught, but have chosen to use the Bishop rig....

Sorry BeHuman, but just who do you think you are. You live off people while insulting them!  I'd personally take that down from your portfolio all together (both your reel and your vimeo site). Its a huge industry no-no and will upset quite a few people if it is seen. You don't yet come across as a lunatic, so I thought I'd pop by and give you that advice.

Re: First Demo Reel! Advice Needed!

Sorry BeHuman but thelittlepenguin84 is right. If you are self taught then you shouldn't be in possession of the Bishop Rig, I really liked your demo reel until i saw that shot. Knowing that you are using a rig specialized for only AM students VERY much took away from the appeal of your demo reel and even of the type of person you may or may not be. Honesty is a crucial thing, especially in this industry. If you aren't an AM student then take of that shot, just use another rig (one that you are allowed to use) and you will be good.

For self taught you have obvious talent, keep learning and pushing, I wish you luck in your job search. Take off the bishop rig, very touchy subject round these parts wink

Good work!

The bishop shot isn't finished, anyways. Never put unfinished work on your reel. I think one version of that griffon walk should be enough. I'm not sure about the Disney font, either, maybe you should stick to a clearer and better readable one, and also because Disney might be a bit annoyed by people using their trademarked font.

Other than that, good luck!

Sorry guys, I really didn't know it was that big of a deal hmm I'll remove the bishop part from the reel. Can we forget this happened and could I still get advice on the reel itself?

Ya, seeing the bishop rig makes me wonder if you actually purchased boris or not.

That being said, you clearly have some talent. Some great stuff in that reel. Though, if you are looking to apply to game studios, I suggest doing more cycles. Climbs, falls, attacks, that sorda thing.

But ya. Good stuff!

Re: First Demo Reel! Advice Needed!

The Boris rig, along with a handful of jason ryans seminars were purchased. The AM rig was lent to me by a friend. I don't know what got through me when putting it in my reel, I do deserve a slap in the face. Thanks for the constructive comments guys, I'm fixing the reel as we speak and will be posting a revised version soon smile

Re: First Demo Reel! Advice Needed!

Yaaa, that's a big mistake by your friend. AM students, and iA students shouldn't be giving out the rigs. I don't see why they would either. Everyone hates seeing the free rigs on reels, and using them. I get that. But if you have access to EXCLUSIVE rigs, why would you want them going around? Even to your friends. Why risk it that you may be the reason they get leaked online? Not saying you are spreading them, beHuman. I just don't get why anyone would give them out. I certainly don't plan to. Even if my friends want them. I spent the money to use them, they should to.

Re: First Demo Reel! Advice Needed!

People are very touchy about the Bishop rig, so good call removing that shot. Slap your friend who lent it to you because he could have gotten you into trouble there. The reel itself looks nice. I agree that if you are applying to games studios then do even more cycles. I'd perhaps even make two reels if I were you. One for tv/film and one for gaming. The two industries really do look for different things. As an aside, what music is that?

Re: First Demo Reel! Advice Needed!

The song is "Something Dark is Coming" from the Battlestar Galactica soundtrack smile now that you mention it, that should probably be in the credits, I'll add that now!

Re: First Demo Reel! Advice Needed!

Alright guys, its done. I removed the "unlicensed rig" part, and I fixed as much as I could based on the comments given. I also am taking into consideration making 2 reels (1 for movies, and 1 for games) in the future, along with adding more body mechanic animations such as climbs. For now this is what I have :

Thanks for all the advice guys smile If anything else is really sticking out and should be fixed, do let me know ~

Cheers!

Re: First Demo Reel! Advice Needed!

ya, its a good reel, though, I feel there is just too many walk / runs. You only really need 1 walk, and 1 run. maybe a bipedal walk, and a quad run, or the other way around.  Also, you can make it so that the front and 3/4 view is on the screen at the same time, side by side.

But yes. definitely get some more body mechanics in there. fighting, climbing, maybe an idle

Re: First Demo Reel! Advice Needed!

Again, the number of cycles will depend on what kind of studio you are applying to. That many cycles won't work for film/television but would probably be okay for gaming.
No wonder I liked that song, I loved Battlestar!! Thanks BeHuman smile

Re: First Demo Reel! Advice Needed!

if you want to work in games and have time to do more pieces try doing.

2 characters interacting - a kill/throw

a character strafing in all 4 directions

some kind of emotive animation on the spot - a roar, a cower. something with personality but in a short timerange.

and try to use a rig that is more realistic than cartoony. this will put you above 99% of reels out there if you want a game job.

well done for listening about bishop.

having watched many of the webinars myself i can spot quite a few ones that jason did in your reel, what this makes me think is, can this guy come up with a shot on his own? and gives me doubts. so if you want to elevate it produce some more content using the techniques you have learnt from those shots.

Thanks Innes, I'll make sure to start working on that soon so I can fit it into my next reel big_smile
