Re: My April progress thread

by her feet there is a visible controls icon. Turn the hands on. You should be able to select the palm, and it will have an attribute called hand scale. I just opened that exact rig and it all seems working ok big_smile
Good luck with your shot!

When I say palm, I mean the palm of where the finger controls are located. Its just the box below the finger controls.

Re: My April progress thread

Terrific, thanks cosmic! That worked perfectly! Now, do you know how to shrink the forearm by any chance? It looks a little odd with the hand a bit smaller but the forearm the same size.

Re: My April progress thread

yup, in the outliner open up Char_Norman1-WorldSpace-grWorldGeo. Than simply drag gra1_world geo out of that heirarchy.
This allows you to select any geo you desire. I reccomend going into component mode(press f9 after you select the forearm) Than scale in y in the front view and z in the top view. After you are done tweaking all the geo you want, simply drag that a1worldgeo back to where you got it from.

Re: My April progress thread

Interesting, running into some issues this time. I selected "Char_Norman_1" in the outliner. Pressed the + button and then selected "WorldSpace". Then selected "grA1_WorldGeo". However, I can't drag it anywhere. If I highlight it and try to drag it down, for example, it just highlights everything underneath it in blue. So I tried opening up the geo further until I could just select the forearm in the outliner (still within the "world geo" grouping) but once I select it the scale option is greyed out. Also, when I press F9 is does nothing (i'm on a Mac, not sure if that makes a difference).

Re: My April progress thread

Reworked a lot of the blocking. Went with the sense of smell rather than sight and I think it reads better. I feel like the audience will have a clearer understanding of why she is recoiling from the food. Thoughts on stuff I can continue to improve before I progress?

Re: My April progress thread

looking so much better now!
That hand being smaller helps out so much.
I like how you get the other hand involved at the end by switching whats holding the hat.
I love how you plug the nose again as you are walking away with the other hand, really nice little touch there.
Im kinda torn about the gesture you do when she says there comes a time, if its a tad too many gestures with the one hand. But so far its coming nicely.
A couple areas I think that you could improve on.
- When she is holding her nose after going into grab the food, I love how she looks at the food, looks at the person, looks at the food, but then she doesn't look back at the person. It's like she is talking to the food now. I think here she should maintain strong eye contact with the person throughout the rest of the shot. Than we can tell she thought about what she was going to say to this person that just served her carp. And she really means what she is telling her now.
-When she pushes the table, be nice to see you put her shoulder into a bit. I don't know if you thought of this but instead of pushing the table, she could simply move the food further away from her. Probly would be a bit more believable. Plus a good chance to put a disgusted look on her face, as she cant stand the smell, she needs it gone, but now she has to touch it to get it gone.
Otherwise I think its coming nicely
Cheers.

Re: My April progress thread

The opening seems... I'm not sure, forced? She looks happy and goes to grab a sample. Then even though her head has only moved about two inches closer, she's horrified by the smell? Doesn't make a lot of sense visually. What if instead you really pushed it?

http://www.fredthemonkey.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/pushingposes.png

Forgive the crudity of the sketches. Point being, instead of her moving her head just a little and then smelling the bad smell, she could lean in all the way before getting a whiff. Then POW it hits her in the face and she rears back truly disgusted.

Just a thought. Whatever you go with, be careful on that spot, because it's the story telling part that sets up the whole clip, so you want it to be stellar!

Changed the beginning of the shot so as to have her leaning down to the tray a lot more. Added a pose of her picking up the food and bringing it toward her mouth before recoiling from it. Also changed the composition of the shot a bit (not sure if it's better or worse) and added a girl holding the tray.
Thoughts? smile

Re: My April progress thread

it looks better. I was worried that it may loose track after deciding to add the lean in but your staying within a few poses and not going all over the place. I'm not to sure about pushing the tray though. She puts a lot into it... I think you could get away with taking that second push pose and cutting it down about 50% and ditch the third pose where her arm is strait. She is old after all so let the server complete that action. Also as you go on keep in mind that the tray should be moving the whole shot so get a nice moving hold going.

Thanks a lot emarston. I will cut down the push of the tray a bit before I move on. And I'll definitely keep in mind the movements of the tray.

Re: My April progress thread

She needs to run her hand through her hair Wellings. Right at the end there, where she almost looks like she's going to. In faaact... maybe get rid of the hat altogether and have her adjust her bun?
It would be a neat little sparkle and add some sizzle. If not run her hand through, just maybe brush a hair or something. Looking good!

Starting to do some clean up. This is my first time ever diving into the curves in spline mode after blocking. In the past I've gone in and just animated every frame one by one. I had a lot of control that way, but it made my work very choppy and I couldn't get that "smooth" look happening. This month I'm doing it the proper way.
Up to the beginning of the audio is cleaned up but I know I can do lots to improve it as it's my first time doing it this way. Crits and comments very welcome as usual! smile

Re: My April progress thread

definitely coming along nicely!

- I would say try to really sell the contrast between Excited & Disappointed;  in the beginning she should be Excited
when trying the Free Sample but then turns to Disgust/Disappointment when she smells it.  You have it somewhat
now, but I think you REALLY could push this a lot further.  (and not only facial, but body silhouettes as well)

- I think her eye lids should be 1/2 shut when she starts her lines on Please... like a "snickering" expression... but
then go back to what you have currently. (I've seen the "1/2 shut eyelids" on many others... so you don't have to
use it all the way through... but I think it works for that part when saying Please... up to when she closes her eyes.)

Hope this makes some sort of ¢? hmm
Cheers! big_smile

Re: My April progress thread

Thanks for the comments! Ricekrispy I would agree about the contrast in emotions. I will definitely try to improve that once I've gone through my first pass in spline. I made the subtle change to her eyelids.

My biggest thing is I want to avoid the dreaded "floaty" animation. With this being my first time animating with the curves in the graph editor I feel like I could easily fall into that trap. So if anything looks floaty to anyone, please do tell! smile
Just a minor update today. Got another 40 frames or so in spline.

Re: My April progress thread

Wow this is progressing wonderfully! Nice job! Man, it's certainly come a long way. Reads MUCH better now, and good job pushing the early poses more. Keep at it!

Re: My April progress thread

I'm going to be picky bc i like this.
as she comes in to grab the food her fingers should close around it. right now she just kinda swoops in fingers already posed.
on the hand push as she drops the food i would play with the finger poses. right now they are almost zero'd out for 3 frames.
as soon as she grabs her nose her spine and head seem to stop, push that follow thorough a few frames to add some texture to that hold.

keep pushing.

Thanks for the reply emarston. I will definitely keep that in mind smile I altered the fingers a touch for now and I'll take a closer look at them later.
Right now I'm wondering about my "time" pose. It feels a little too similar to some of her other poses but I'm not sure what would work better. If anyone has a suggested I'm all ears!
