My April progress thread
Hello fellow animators! So last month I entered the contest for the first time in almost a year. However, after 60hrs of work it didn't turn out as I originally planned. I know I still have a lot to learn but I think a big problem I have it that I haven't developed a strong workflow. I pretty much just jumped right into Maya and, for the most part, made it up as I went along.
This month I am dedicating myself to planning the shot, acting it out, taking more advantage of flipbook and getting a strong idea figured out before I even open Maya. I am watching Ken Fountain's "Basic Acting" lecture tonight to try to learn some more.
Anyway, I will post as much of my progress here as I can and hopefully with a bit of feedback and critiques I can end up with an entry that I like!
Cheers ![]()
What I ended up with. Still so much work to be done (both for this entry and in animating in general!)

Thanks MD!
OMG people!! I am watching Ken Fountain's demo/lecture and the world of animation just got SO MUCH EASIER when he mentioned tween machine and tragidiTOOLS. I never knew these existed. Do you know how much I have struggled adding breakdowns into my work? I always wondered how animators did it effortlessly and made their work look so smooth. I feel like I have been saved by some miracle lol. I have downloaded and installed the tween machine script and I cannot wait to utilize it this month!
Tomorrow I start planning my scene on paper.

You might find this tutorial useful too.
It's a part of a tutorial series from Keith Lango about the importance of strong poses.
Cheers and have fun animating for the next comp.

Thanks a lot gorgon. I actually just watched that tutorial a couple of days ago
Pity I didn't do it BEFORE I started last months contest lol. Oh well, I'm giving myself lots of information to absorb now.
PS I just tested out Tween Machine and I'M IN LOVE! How did I not know about this before?? I'm so stoked to get animating this month!

Re: My April progress thread
Alright, well I have my ideas scribbled down and I've acted out the scene 50+ times. When I acted it out my idea started to change as I loosened up and did some different things. The idea is still pretty simple and it might get done a lot, but I wanted to focus most of my time on strong, clear poses and well defined acting choices, rather than making sure the gimmick is groundbreaking. I am not terrific at Flipbook so I may just storyboard my shot on paper first before moving on to Maya. Sorry for the boring update, more interesting ones to come soon.

Re: My April progress thread
Tween machine is great, especially during blocking. As a matter of fact I found out about it during my previous (and first) participation for the competition.
Anyways you seem to have prepared well for the current comp.
I'll check back here to see what you got cooking.
Cheers

Re: My April progress thread
Thanks gorgon! I hope my extra planning and the use of tween machine can help me this month!
I think I have settled on an idea. Thankfully it has grown in the past 12 hours.
Final idea: an old lady is meandering toward the exit of a small, family owned food shop. She glances over and sees a free sample tray. Pleasantly surprised she sees takes a toothpick and takes a bite. She recoils in disgust and looks alarmingly at the food she just swallowed. Dialogue begins. At the "best left to the professionals" section of the audio she places the half eaten sample back onto the try with the others. Then she exits the store.
The tricky part for this is dealing with the "we" at the beginning of the dialogue, which suggests either multiple characters or that the woman is speaking on behalf of an organization or group. I thought it would be funnier to make the woman a little quirky and weird by having her walk around with a pet parrot on her shoulder. As the woman takes the toothpick the parrot very quickly leans in and takes a tiny bite of the food as well. This way when the woman says "we" she is referring to herself and her pet parrot, but it's subtle. If you pick up on it you realize that the woman is just that little bit odd.
I feel like there are enough small gimmicks in there and there is enough happening in the piece to tell a decent story.
Now, on to sketching and acting it out.

Re: My April progress thread
Alright, scratch the parrot lol. It could just be stupid. The woman can just be speaking for "we the public". Or, if I feel like there needs to be another character in the shot with her that she's speaking for, I will add in a grandchild that she is walking with. Also, I think it will work better if I include a character that is holding a tray of free samples. She will enthusiastically thrust the tray in front the old woman with a stupid grin on her face.
Alright, I think i've finalized this bad boy. I will act out the scene a million times tonight and hopefully tomorrow I can start some basic blocking.

Re: My April progress thread
Has anyone tried to open the Old Lady Norman rig with the yellow dress, makeup and glasses? I have seen it used here once before but when I downloaded the rig it has no joints or controls for the arms and hands. Is this a glitch with the rig? Or just a problem I am having?

Re: My April progress thread
There are a few things I've learned over time, especially concerning tweenMachine.
1) Don't rely on it too heavily, that tends to create very boring arcs (took me way too long to realize this haha)
2) Get an arc tracker, it really helps seeing your arcs and making wonky stuff really obvious.
Good luck ![]()

Re: My April progress thread
Woot, a top 50 in March! Considering it was my first attempt at acting in almost a year, I'm pretty excited to get my highest ranking so far. Hopefully I can push on this month and crack into the top 25. Should have some blocking to share by Monday.

Re: My April progress thread
Oh, and fakepivot, thanks a lot for the response, you were right and I was able to find the controls for the arms and turn them on
Stina - regarding Tween Machine I figured I could use it to get the timing of my breakdowns nailed down. I noticed Ken Fountain had to go in a fix many arcs manually to make sure the movements were dynamic enough, so I figure I'll be doing that as well. One thing is for sure though, using Tween will cut back several hours of work! Also, that arc tracking you mentioned sounds like a great tool, unfortunately the link you posted is broken

Scene: an enthusiastic worker in a family owned food store offers and old lady some free samples courtesy of "Crawley Food Co." The woman is repulsed by the food on offer and gives a patronizing lecture before leaving the store.
Finally got what I suppose you would call a "detailed blocking" done. Crits and comments on my posing and timing most appreciated! I really want to try and break into the top 20 this month if I can. Tough ask, but I'm going to try my best!

Re: My April progress thread
It's hard to give too much feedback at such an early stage, so instead I'll give you my thoughts on your last entry and why perhaps it didn't get higher. I think what really hurt it was the lip sync not being quite spot on. You need to leave the mouth open a bit longer at the end of statements, and then close it. It's closing a bit early. Also the camera move, while very foreboding, distracted me from the animation itself. I think it would have been a stronger piece without the slow truck in.
Much luck on this month! I have no doubt you can crack the top 20. ![]()

Re: My April progress thread
Thanks JKR. I was actually pleasantly surprised by my 43rd place last month. I could only see the negatives with the piece and was just hoping for a top 100! Lip sync is still an issue of mine. I have never been trained on how best to approach it and it's pretty much just guess work for me. That and I only had one day to do it last month as I ran out of time. Hopefully this month I can improve the lip sync. Also, there will be no truck in this time around lol

...for lipsync, just make sure to NOT animate every word... you're going to have to say the lines a lot in a mirror so you can see which words flow together using similar phonemes!

Re: My April progress thread
Early thoughts on this piece.
At the moment the staging really isn't working for me. You could really utilize the rule of thirds a lot more, I find myself always staring at the middle of the screen which really isn't appealling and takes away from the acting choices you will be making.
Here's a still pic of your scene with the thirds for you to reference.
The eyes should be around that upper left cube. The hand is positioned nicely in the frame but it seems a little large and is distracting from the acting choices you are making with her face. Which is really where you want the focus of the shot to be. I believe you can scale normans hands down pretty easily I would try making them much smaller, old ladies typically don't have very large hands anyways.
I think you could frame the table in between the bottom two cubes and try to get the free samples somewhere around that bottom right cube.
I was waiting for you to post some reference!!!!! What happened to you acting it out??
I think that would help you so much with this shot. You have a lot of options with the shot you are doing and it seems like you just started animating it. Think about why she doesn't want the food, maybe it smells bad, maybe it looks unappealing. Atm you have her do the push away, and then she gestures right over top of what she pushed away, if it's that bad get her away from the food. Not gesturing above it.
You could play off of so many things, instead you started off reaching for air and we are left to figure out why she reached for air. don't be afraid to put something that resembles dog food or a pile of sh^t on that table.
Hope that stuff helps you out at this early stage.
Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Re: My April progress thread
Thanks so much for the critique cosmicfool!!
Okay, in response to each thing you mentioned. The camera position I have at the moment is very temporary, I pretty much had something set up that resembled my final staging but it definitely wasn't set in stone, so I love the suggestions you made. I'll get on that asap.
Scaling norman's hand, on this rig, for some reason appears to be very tricky. The geo is frozen so the only way you can select it is via the hypergraph hierarchy. So I did that but the scaling for the hands are frozen. How do you unfreeze those so I can shrink the hand?
I did act out the scene but unfortunately I've lost the firewire cable for my camcorder so I couldn't upload it. I did do it though, I promise! lol
As for the reason why she recoils from the food: well, at the moment it is just supposed to look unappealing. However now that you mentioned smell I can see how that could read a LOT better. It would be much better to have her recoil and kind of plug her nose or at least bring her hand to her nose to show that it smells awful. She could then keep her distance from the tray throughout the scene.
Thanks so much, I will get on these changes asap. Hopefully have a new blocking done in a few days ![]()
