iAnimate - Games Division

Anyone taking it!? I am starting workshop 1 on May 7th. I'm in Richard Lico's class.  I'm SUPER excited for this. I'm really curious to see how much I'll improve through this program. You see all these GREAT iA reels after they finish, but you never really see the before shots. So its hard to gauge if they were already good and just got a bit better, or if it's night vs day.

Re: iAnimate - Games Division

I plan on taking WS4 and then coming over and doing all 3 game shops to practice body mechanics more and going back to feature. I figure I can still glean stuff by watching the QnA's and reviews, though smile

Re: iAnimate - Games Division

Have you taken iA before, Camaro?  I see you were in AM for a bit (saw the ball bounce on your blog).

Let me see if I understand how this all works. Every week, you get your 1 hour lecture from your mentor, but you have access to all the other mentors lectures as well, since they are recorded? And I think that's what you are talking about for the QnA? Do you have access to other peoples reviews as well? Also, I dunno if it's the same for feature, but Games, our lectures are only an hour. How much are they able to teach in that amount of time? I thought the lectures were for them to show how they animate. But it seems impossible for them to do the assignments in an hour? Im sooo curious about this. And SOOOOO excited. I know it will all be amazing, and they know exactly what they are doing. I', just a curious bee.

I know they are making 2 new rigs for the games division. I wonder if those are ONLY for the games guys, or if feature will steal them too. lol. I feel they`ll be better suited for the games guys though.

Do you have any pre-iA stuff you could show me, and post-iA stuff?

I guess it all comes down to your understanding of animation, as well as how much time you put into it. I just saw one guys reel that I wasn't impressed with, but I know each person will be different. I think my understanding of the movements and everything is good, but I just don't have the training to create the movement. I don't know how people achieve the insanely fluid motions.

If you`re on msn, I'd love to chat. SLipsius at the g mails. smile

Re: iAnimate - Games Division

Yeah, I took the now WS3 last term, WS2 this term, and I'll be taking WS4 next term. My blog hasn't been updated as far as animations go...

The mentors can choose to do lectures during the QnA session, or they can just leave it open to questions. The "overall" lectures are given by Jason Ryan once a week. You get access to every single recorded QnA and Review once the mentor puts the link up - that's why I said I would be able to glean a lot of information from the recordings without even taking the class - it's true for any of them. The QnA's technically go for an hour as far as the schedule is concerned, but it is not uncommon for the mentors to go over. And yes, you'd be surprised what they can squeeze into that time. The rigs will be available to ALL the students and you can use them for as long as you like even after graduating.

I'm not on MSN but I get on Skype all the time(camarontg). I'd be glad to show you pre- and current-iA stuff.

Re: iAnimate - Games Division

Ah, I think games is a little different then. On our May 7th schedule, the games section tells you the times for "lecture" and "review" where the feature section tells you the times for "Q&A" and "Review". Sounds like it will be different. And I would hope so. Jason Ryan is a fantastic animator and teacher, but if he doesn't animate for games, I don't want him teaching me. No offense to him in any way. But that's the whole draw to this, right? Taught by professionals who are in the industry doing what they are teaching? Game animation has different techniques and standards than feature. So I would hope our main lessons are coming from a game animator.

Too bad feature gets our rigs. hehe. I want exclusivity! muahaha!

All I can say about the games section so far, is that it was not designed for people on the east coast. All the lectures are either at noon on weekdays, or midnight. Which, noon works for those who don't have fulltime jobs. Luckily I can still do it at work, on my lunch hour. Ill just start late if the lectures go late. smile The late night reviews will be tiring, but Im fully ready to give it everything I've got!

Re: iAnimate - Games Division

Ah! Guess it is a bit different than feature. I guess we'll have to wait and see. You can be assured that it'll be taught by some of the best in the game industry for sure.

As for the rigs...they are still exclusive. they'll be unique to only a couple hundred students at a time. But in the end it's all about the animation anyway smile

Re: iAnimate - Games Division

I'm guessing it's Richard Arroyo. I think Richard Lico goes by "Lico", but I don't think he is on these forums just yet.

Same instructor, Adam, but you appear to be in group 2. Though, there aren't different times posted for group 1 and 2 like on the Feature schedule, so who knows? The lectures will probably be the same for both groups, just different review times.

Either way... wooot! Good choice switching to Games 1! We can push each other.

Re: iAnimate - Games Division

Having spoke with Richard Arroyo, I think one of the neat advantageous of taking the Games WS, even if you leaned more towards feature/TV/etc., is that you will learn to become very efficient in the games WS. Good luck guys and I look forward to seeing what you produce.

Re: iAnimate - Games Division

I have heard that games mostly have mocap  datas...so are the classes going to be  a mix of mocap and key framing or any one of these alone....just curious to know how the gaming industry works...

Re: iAnimate - Games Division

Atheesh,

Some games definitely have A LOT of mocap, but there will always be moves that you just can't do with mocap. Think of God of War, for instance. All the boss battles where they are jumping and flipping and are all over the place. Or all monsters you see in games. Animals running around.

From my understanding, the games section of iA is all key frame, though.

Re: iAnimate - Games Division

It's all keyframe animation being dealt with in the workshops. But mo-cap clean up might be exposed too, but I don't know. For our last weekly demo of the block (this Friday) with Jason, he's going to be doing an interview with Ric Arroyo and David Hubert, the two guys who are heading up that portion of the program. It'll be recorded so maybe portions can be posted on the site.

okay...how interesting is it to work with mocap...is it fun like keyframing...people who do the mocap cleaning,do they fall under the animator category?....

Re: iAnimate - Games Division

Yes, they are still animators. I've done some of it. It can be fun if you`re involved with the actual capture of it all and what not. But I much prefer key framing it all.
