Re: 390 plus entries.
I remember we had the same kind of discussion the last time it hit over 300 entries.
In the end, voters do vote and even if some entries I don't consider "ready for competition", that's my opinion and I vote accordingly. I was impressed by all the great entries there are this month actually.
There are allways months where more people participate, and months with less participation, I don't think it's that much of a problem (to a certain limit maybe, I have to admit 390 entries is insane
)
The idea of screening off the animations that clearly aren't ready for the competition could be a good idea. I counted 50 entries that clearly have no animation principals in them. Another 90 entries that are not complete rubish but definately don't have much animation principals down.
But where to put the limit of an entry "ready for competition" is pretty hard. If it can be done, it's great.

Re: 390 plus entries.
This was the month that 2nd and 3rd place get the kenny roy memberships right? I think that was a huge motivating factor. Along with the dialogue was really cool and you could have guns as props! So why wouldn't you animate a piece! (get it?) I don't think we have to decide to change the voting right away. I'd say wait a couple months. If this continues into April and May, then if there are still astounding amounts of entries with the majority not being ready then I think we should think about a new system. Just my thoughts.

I voted on all the entries and just counted that 155 out of the 390 in my final ranking page received 3 stars or less.

Counting I had 96 that got 3 or less starts in my voting.
And interestingly, nothing 10 or 11 this month. Huh. It did feel like a rather mediocre month of entries overall... (Of course, I think I've only ever given out 2 or 3 11s in the past two years.)

JKR, I'm with you there, except that I never gave anybody ever more than 9 stars.
I think this discussion pops up every time the entry record gets broken. I guess there was a similar discussion when the mark hit 100 the first time ![]()

I think we each have our own voting habits. I know I am very strict with rewarding stars. Anything over a four and you've probably worked at a studio for a number of years. Probably why my karmojo is so bad ![]()

That seems super unfair. I mean, it really kills the average for entries that are actually "Good." When you come down to it, 5 should be average. So if something is just an average entry, it really ought to get a five right out of the gate. Then when you have good stuff, it needs to get above a five, and likewise something worse needs below.

Re: 390 plus entries.
ive gone back in after voting and changed my evaluation on some. It truly is humbling to watch all the really good entries and then watch my own and see how poorly it came out in comparison ![]()

Re: 390 plus entries.
@JKR.
When I vote I take into account where I believe it would fall in the rankings. When you took at it historically, the highest anybody ever achieved was a 9. Historically, look at entries that usually get 3-4s. If I believe the animation is suffering from similar things, thats how I vote.

Re: 390 plus entries.
Voting is confusing because the FAQ page suggests that 3-4 stars should be average, whereas the actual voting form pushes 5-6 stars as average. I tend to start at 5 and move up or down.

I think that should probably be made more clear, so everyone is on the same page. I always see 5 being about average. Not good, not bad, just sort of boring. (Truthfully in my opinion THESE are the entries that cause voting fatigue, not the "not ready for competition" ones. They're dull and uninspired, and don't stand out even a little bit.)

Re: 390 plus entries.
The median score last month (#195) was 3.96; the voters seem to be in tune with 3-4 as typical scores.
No one got a 5.0 until #96 (within the top 25%).
A 6.0 doesn't come until #24 (about top 6%). Six out of a possible 11 is still just a slightly better than half-way score.
So it doesn't look like the 1-11 voting scheme is pushing excessively high scores.
