Re: 390 plus entries.

I did all 390, but I think for those who get judged at the end, they will be unfairly judged because I have a feeling that most would have their fill around the 200 mark. I guess the best way to do it is groups per day.

Everyone sees the entries in a different order, and every entry gets an even rotation between first, last, etc in the order.  So the "voter fatigue" balances out across the entries.  smile

Re: 390 plus entries.

I find there are quite a few entires that have nothing to do with anything at all. Not a significant portion but neve rreally seen this many retrofitted entries or unrelated entries before. Of course, there's also the fact that the audio is from a very popular show too, so hence a bajilion entries

That's a good thing that every one see it in different order. At least it wont be unfair.

Re: 390 plus entries.

390 is crazy! It's too bad because it's really hard to find the time and patience to go through them all. Unfortunately most are poor and the animator obviously isn't ready to tackle acting yet. I've been trying for a few years to get better and I don't think I'm ready! If the number of entries continues to grow in the future  something may need to be done...?

Re: 390 plus entries.

Is 390 the highest ever?

I haven't' watched any yet.  Are there a lot where a guy was trying to tunnel out of prison but came up just inside of the wall?  That was the first idea I had and my first ideas tend to be not terribly unique.

Re: 390 plus entries.

We've struggled with the question of what to do when there's a ton of entries for years now.  390 is pretty insane, though, and every year there seem to be more and more entries.  We'd hate to lose the "anyone can throw their hat in the ring" opportunity, but maybe we can do something to make it easier on the voters when there's so many entries.

Mark suggested tweaking the display order algorithm so that, instead of just seeing the least-watched entry next, it also makes sure that you see at least one higher-ranked entry every 15 entries or so.  That could help make sure you see some variety, maybe?  And make people more likely to just drop in and vote for a few dozen for fun?  I don't know, we'll have to figure something out at this rate, though!

Thanks man...  or should I say thanks corpse?  wink  It helps that the community here is so completely awesome, and like 99.9% self-sufficient at getting their work uploaded on time.  We're lucky!  smile

Re: 390 plus entries.

Yes, thank you aja for the work you all put into this site. It really is amazing. This site has helped me so much an inspired a new career path for me (one that I'm still a long way from lol). I do hope that something can be figured out for voting because, as you say, 390 is pretty insane. It's a tough call because you want to encourage everybody to participate, but you don't want to discourage people from voting. My personal opinion is that people should have to submit a simple exercise for evaluation. Something as simple as a well animated ball bouncing on the spot for example. If they can do that, they can participate. If they can't, they can't enter. The rest of the site would still be available for them to use, such as the personal works forums, but they just can't enter until they know the basics. There are probably 50-75 entries this month that wouldn't pass the ball bounce test and shouldn't be tackling acting pieces anyway. It would be a better use of their time to learn the basics.
Anyway, just my two cents smile

SO it's YOUR fault, fakepivot! I'll never talk to you again tongue
I find this months voting even more gruesome, since there is no weekend for me to leisurely watch them all during the two days. Hmpf. Oh, well, here we go, then. big_smile

Re: 390 plus entries.

I don't really know if this could work but its a try.
Before an entrant uploads his entry, there could be a check list that they would have to tick possibly, that they have attempted the shot to various levels of completion, and that it is not incomplete, or unfit for the competition. Doing so, will probably force the person to complete the shot and get it to a better standard than earlier.
As for those who would lie on this form and claim to have completed it even though it wasn't could be barred from entering future competitions. I know that this is a public forum and everyone should get a chance to learn, but one should start to accept the fact that, they really will not magically win the competition just by taking part in it.
This idea might not be perfect but it can be modified to suit the site better. Something really needs to be done to keep this a competition, or it really isn't any fun forcing low ranks on ill-made entries and end up dissuading the entrants, who take part. If they wish to learn and improve, they do have the Personal Animation Works section to post to.
Anyone who supports this ?

Re: 390 plus entries.

I am in support of anything that could help the process. You don't want to steer people away from the site, but like you said, there is the Personal Works forum that is always available. Somehow I think we need to filter out the people who are entering animations that are either a) clearly not finished or b) obviously the work of a beginner animator that isn't ready for this level of animation. Like I said, I don't want to discourage beginners, we are all beginners at one time, but it really does not help you to improve your work by tackling something you aren't ready for.

Re: 390 plus entries.

There are a lot of incomplete entries which is annoying. I think a lot of people run out of time and then submit it anyway as a "we'll just see how well it does" sort of thing.

Are there?  We usually reject incomplete entries (there were over a dozen this month), but I wouldn't be surprised if a few fell through the cracks this month.  Oh, but you're probably talking about entries that are still in blocking/etc.  I'm talking about entries where the video cuts off before the audio clip is done.  It's harder to decide what "unfinished" means for the rest of them...  but maybe that's something we could look into, determining what the bar is for "finished" work and disqualifying entries that don't meet it.  It'd mean a lot more entries wouldn't make it in, but maybe that's not a bad thing at this point?

Re: 390 plus entries.

admins should decide which enterys are ready for competition, and accept them. but from animation standpoint.
