Basics reel

Hello people,
For the last few months I have been mentored by Cosmicfool, or as the real world knows him Matthew Finch. I think when he offered to mentor me, I'm not sure he realised how much I had to learn with so many bad habits to address. I wish to say producing a basics reel is not easy. But hopefully you guys will like it.
I'm afraid I can't change much as I move onto the next stage, which isnt to enter our monthly competition yet. I am definately not ready. But here's my reel, please let me know your thoughts. Warm Regards, Steven

Re: Basics reel

Looks great, Steve!
There are just a few additions I would recommend:
put your contact details on the title card and in the end titles.
Cut a few frames from the end of the stork shot, the non-moving stork seems to be halting the flow of your reel, imho.

Other than that, get rocking characters!

Re: Basics reel

i'm with wolfor too. I would change the order a bit as well tho and have the fox jumping first. i think it's the strongest. but as i said before this is a killer start. congrats again man.

Re: Basics reel

Nice job Steve, you have came along way in a short time.
Shame you didn't have time to get it all perfect! But as they say, gotta keep moving forward.
Looking forward to seeing how you progress with the full body characters big_smile

Re: Basics reel

thank you everyone.

I must also say that I have received a very detailed email from eric scheur with notes I plan to address. Just in a few weeks time. I need some breathing space first.

@Wolfor. Characters are a little way off. I have plans though. But that's what I believe is the beauty of producing such a reel. Animation basics are not simple. So many things to be thought about and if anything, this reel has deepened my appreciation of what the top professionals make look so simple.

p.s. I think I have also learnt the difference in trying to study alone. Its definitely not advisable. Thankfully, other than me, so many other people have helped (Dapoon, Wolfor, Eric Swymer, Stina Boberg). I have learnt from these and others. I have come along way in a short space of time and couldnt have done it without them.

Re: Basics reel

Some day, I hope enough people see this and realize that a good reel with simple animations that display solid fundamentals looks a HELLUVA LOT BETTER than the ones that try to tackle "cool" scenes like combat and comedy, but without the skills to do it convincingly.

I applaud your determination to get your foundations right before trying to take on Darth Vader in Cloud City. You just saved yourself a hand!

Good job, dude!

Re: Basics reel

Good work. I would move the first piece though. The bird has no settle really, so it kind of ruins the piece. Add settle, or move it towards the back of the reel.

Your 3 piece, the ball bounce, right after the one with the stack of letter blocks. The ball that gets launched, it constantly rotates in the same direction, even though it hits walls over and over. Walls add friction and tend to change the direction of the spin.

Good basics though!
