Parenting/Constraining Video Tutorial!

I've finally (almost) completed my parenting/constraining tutorial video. The first 4 videos talk about Maya's hierarchy basics, parenting vs constraining, the vis toggle and blendParent tricks, and the better solution for constraining props to a character. I'll be making one more video showing a final practical example of how to toggle the parenting on and off without worrying about a blendParent (which is confusing to work with). So here's the first video, just follow the links to the right for the other ones, as they are the only videos on my account at the moment:

I'd appreciate if this was stickied, as the issue seems to come up pretty often. That and I worked pretty hard on the videos smile

Re: Parenting/Constraining Video Tutorial!

Hey man - I've just been through the tutorials, really great information, and I'm happy to report, that after years of battling with Parenting/Constraints, it's finally 'clicked' on how it all works, and I thank you good sir!

I'm having a wee bit of trouble with setting up a Set Driven Key on one of my controllers, and thought that maybe you'd know what was going on?

(Still working on my guard animation) I've correctly set up his pole, and his hand to the pole. I'm now trying to set up the second hand to the pole, so that I have a bit of control on it. I've set up the second hand as I've done the first, with your awesome tutorial, using a Locator to control the original controller, with that null group over the top of it, but I've tried to go one step further by adding a Set Driven Key to toggle simply between the guard's pole, and world space. I've managed to create the drop down menu and everything as you've demonstrated in the tutorial, and managed to constraint the hand to the pole ok.

However, when I go to set the Driven Keys for the weights, 1 for the pole and 0 for World, changing the dropdown menu on the locator doesn't effect the weight, but doing it manually on the offset works ok. Can you think what I might be missing in the Set Driven Keys attributes? As you've described in the tutorial, I change the drop down menu first before changing the weight values, and I've also tried changing the weight first, but no luck.

Any suggestions? Thanks man.

Re: Parenting/Constraining Video Tutorial!

Got it! I accidentally reversed what was the Driver, and what was the Driven. Thanks again man!

Re: Parenting/Constraining Video Tutorial!

Hey Cam. I've been using this technique like crazy now, and it's working like a charm - I can't thank you enough.

I've just come across something that I'm having some difficulty with, and was wandering if you perhaps would know how I can work around it?

By using the 'Last Example' video, this is how I do my Constraints now. In my current scene I have a farmer holding on to a rock, and I've animated a fair bit of him interacting with this rock. Then, after animating pretty much the whole way through,  I thought it might be pretty cool if I could have the farmer also interact with his hat.

The problem is, since I didn't set up the constraints for the hat before beginning to animate, I'm having a hard time figuring out how to successfully add a new Enum to the hand, with the weight of the hat to it, so that will be added to the existing 'world' and 'rock' values. Can you suggest anything?

Again, thanks man - really appreciate the videos.

Re: Parenting/Constraining Video Tutorial!

I've been playing around with it all afternoon, and realized that I was doing the wrong thing - by using a totally different Constraint that I should have been using, all is good - I've got it to work beautifully.

You should be able to view them with the playlist at the top. They all have the same password.
