What software do you use?

So I'm curious. What is your preferred software when animating movies? Personally, I have learned to use Lightwave, but now I'm attempting to venture into Maya and 3DS Max. Just thought I'd like to hear other opinions since I'm new to this site.

Re: What software do you use?

I taught myself to use most programs, but I prefer Maya for animation and general work.

Re: What software do you use?

I think animating is more or less the same in every program, but, being used to Maya having to battle MessiahStudio is kinda tiresome... I mean no way of changing the rotation order??? Welcome to gimbal lock HELL big_smile
I've been using XSI as well, but that was setup so it resembled Maya in almost every respect, and worked just like a charm.
Never used 3ds max yet, though, heard that this is quite different for Maya users.

Motionbuilder 90% of the time, the rest is all Maya.

Re: What software do you use?

I've used Maya, Max, lightwave and blender. But I prefer Maya, mainly because all of the awesome scripts that I literally couldn't live without. If they developed similar scripts in any other program, or if I could draw I wouldn't have any preference!

Re: What software do you use?

If I could do everything hand-drawn I would, but it takes a long time, so mostly I work in Flash. I'm trying to get into Toon Boom Animate, but it's proving more difficult than I anticipated.

Honestly, I prefer Messiah. But the fact that Messiah doesn't have a lot of rigs out there kind of forced me into Maya. But I don't mind.

Re: What software do you use?

I started with the old Softimage 3d, before it became XSI, and then shifted to maya after a few years.  Good thing I was able to shift to Maya, as it has become the preferred software of the big studios.  smile

Re: What software do you use?

Definitely prefer Maya. I get the feeling I would be very unproductive if I got a job where they used any other software. I know a good animator is supposed to be able to adapt to the software, but dammit, I just love Maya so much, despite all her quirks.

Re: What software do you use?

Maya have very average curve editor and frustrating timeline controls
- Shift+Drag to select keys instead of LeftClick+Drag
- Middle-mouse - in middle of selection or it scales -  to move selected keys...
- RightClick-Copy/Paste instead of just leftclick select CTRL+C/CTRL+V .
- ShiftSelect-RightClick-Menu-Delete instead of Delete (keyboard) on selected keys
- Need to Right-Click, Snap when you scale keys instead of auto-snap. Sometime autosnap works but not always.... Need to ShiftSelect, RightClick, Snap when it fails...
- When grouped togheter, keys become a big red block... Need to zoom-in to do that depressing ShiftSelect...
- When keys are selected, the timeline cursor don't update when moving Next/Previous Keys
Not sure why people say it's good for animation. Maybe cause the name is cool.

Seriously, think it's popular cause there's a lot of scripts and free rigs.
Euler filter is very good in Maya tho.
The attributes on the right is good too.

Max have the best timeline and a better curve editor than Maya imo.
XSI Best curve editor.

Re: What software do you use?

@Pinet sounds like you're just used to a different program. Personally I would never like to select something in a timeline and delete it, because I might have the object selected instead but the visual reperesentation would be the same.

And as of all the 2012 releases, all the programs have the same curve editor.

but everyones entitled to their opinion of course.

Re: What software do you use?

I prefer modelling in Max, with the GMT and my hotkeys I am super speedy. Now 'Sculpting'....sure Zbrush, but then I prefer Mudbox. I must admit I do not like the interface of zbrush, seems to be different just for the sake of standing out from the crowd. Whats the treating your mesh like a tool? How about meshes are meshes, and tools are tools. And I'm sure people are now going to start calling me a tool.
