Re: New XSheet timing tool
Question: would people like a release every time I add a new feature or should I wait and release a version after I've done a whole bunch of them - say every two weeks?

Re: New XSheet timing tool
Maybe for every feature because then it's out in the wild and it's probably easier to bugtest each feature individually.
Also I don't know how hard it would be to implement, but the SundayPipeline install/update system is quite nice. I'm looking into implementing that into my future scripts.
Also for the DPT, you could add a text box to allow for adjusting of the frame range? It's a bit odd that the final pose can't be moved a few frames past where it is.
Otherwise great work man! Thanks for sharing it as well.

Re: New XSheet timing tool
I'd vote for releasing with each feature too, might make it easier to test.
One other idea would be an option to show/hide the thumbnails in the x sheet, just so it's easier to work with longer sequences without having to scroll a lot. I don't know if you are familiar with Digicel Flipbook, I guess that's what I'm getting the idea from. When the thumbs are hidden there's still a flat color in the frame to show where the keys are but all the frames are the same height.
I'd also vote for Ripple editing to be on by default, so say if you grab a frame and move it up or down the frames after it move too, keeping the same distance from the dragged key. The reason I'd suggest is that typically I guess there will be a lot of repetitive trial and error when testing timing of shots and right clicking is slow for that kind of work.
Cheers,
Brian

Re: New XSheet timing tool
So something that will probably address some of the quick edit requests - I've started adding hotkeys. In particular, the numeric keys. When you have a pose selected or are inbetween poses, you press a number key and the timing adjusts to that number of frames between that pose and the next. I'll try and release that tomorrow.

Sounds great, hotkeys are definitely going to be very handy I reckon. Looking forward to checking out the next version.

Re: New XSheet timing tool
New update available. This adds hotkeys:
- Press the number for the number of frames the pose should hold for. Can have the pose selected or be between poses.
- Up/Down arrow keys - go up/down a frame
- Right/Left arrow keys - go to next/previous pose

Re: New XSheet timing tool
That's really nice, thanks for the update. Those hotkeys really make it a lot faster to use. The main thing tripping me up right now is no undo, I still find it easy to loose poses when dragging them around and there's no way to get them back apart from pressing get poses again which looses the timing changes.

Brian

Re: New XSheet timing tool
Just wanted to say that this looks like being another really useful tool so thanks cgjedi for taking the time to make it and release it to the animation community!
Haven't had a look at the updated version yet but having the ability to turn on ripple editing by say alt-clicking on a frame and dragging so that consecutive frames move too would be great (apoligies if something similar is already there and I've missed it!).
Looking forward to having the audio implemented in playback too.
thanks again!

Re: New XSheet timing tool
The new number hotkeys feature is basically ripple editing. I'll most likely be working on an undo system and file save/ load as the next features.

Re: New XSheet timing tool
Thanks for the feedback. A bit off topic - what are the main animation forums these days? I want to broaden where I get feedback to other great sites.

Re: New XSheet timing tool
I think this is one of the main ones for animation, one that's probably worth posting on would be the CGTalk Maya forum too.

Re: New XSheet timing tool
The Hotkeys are indeed fantastic! thanks for the update.
Another option would maybe be to use insert and delete to move subsequent frames up and down the xsheet, or even holdong ctrl or alt to allow the input of numbers from 10 to 99? (ie dpt waits for 2 numbers to be input before updating xsheet).
Just thinking that for really early blocking you may have frame gaps larger than the number hotkeys allow on their own.
Otherwise though this is really great stuff you are doing here!
cheers

Re: New XSheet timing tool
Still have to download the update, but does the DPT capture all hotkeys while it's open, or only when the window is active?
Because a delete key hotkey could be quite disastrous if it's invoked and the user is accidently in the viewport. Especially when Maya(quite commonly) decides to disable undos.
But great work man!

Re: New XSheet timing tool
Thanks for the video. It's shaping up into a really handy tool now. My biggest requests would be :
1- a better indicator as to the current frame rate, it just feels a bit clunky to me adjusting the slider, then hovering over to see the rate, then adjust again etc. Just a simple text field with the FPS in to beside the slider would help a lot IMO.
2 - Undo.(ctrl Z most obvious hotkey I guess)
I know I've mentioned both before, just trying to clarify what I see as the weakest parts of the workflow right now.]
Keep up the great work. Up to now the best options for this in Maya were to send the frames out to an external app like Flipbook or Monkeyjam, this is much more streamlined.
Cheers,
Brian

Re: New XSheet timing tool
Got it. It's all on my list to do (in no particular order):
-file save/load
-import any sequential images
-undo
-audio support
-rework the transport controls (fps input)
-update single pose from Maya
-scaling
-setting breakdowns, extremes and keys
-adding timing chart with arcs

Sounds great, particularly the audio support, that would be awesome for timing lipsync.

Woo hoo, great updates. A lot more robust now for me with the undo feature active. The FPS entry is really handy too.
Many thanks.
