October competition
Little of a late start, but I think I can still get this finished. I'm thinking of this scene taking place in a hospital. Her nephew/niece has just been born. After oooh-ing and ahhh-ing over the kid for a bit, she steps out of the room and delivers her thoughts.
I knocked out some rough poses to start things off. They're more or less in the correct timing, but it could certainly use some tweaking.

Got a couple more hours of work into it. Got some more breakdowns in, and it's finally beginning to take shape. Think I'll start converting this to spline pretty soon. Just gotta break it down a little more.

Re: October competition
Began working on splining the torso. Had some technical difficulties along the way. For some reason the eyes started aiming away from the eye control, and whenever I try and isolate select the viewport, the eyes freak out and Maya crashes. Got the eye aim fixed, but you're just going to have to try and ignore the hands for now.
Comments/critiques/suggestions/whatever are welcome! I'm always looking for ways to make this better ![]()

Re: October competition
Got the first pass of the torso done! Still needs some tweaking, I think, especially the last half. I think I may need to tone down the moving holds. Or maybe play with the timing a bit? I'm not sure.
Any thoughts?

Rico: Yeah, I posed the hands with IK. I had wanted to hide them while I worked on the torso, but Maya kept crashing when I tried. I'll be working on the hands next.
dubslice: Yeah, it does kinda look like a hiccup, doesn't it? Darn. I'm hoping it'll read better when I get the face and hands in, but I'll definitely be tweaking that bit in the future. Thanks for the tip!

Re: October competition
Hey Squib, your spline pass is really coming along.
Obviously the hands will make a huge difference.
Couple of things, currently she has good tension in her arm when she closes the door. But that probably has more to do with the fact that her hands are still stepped, so just watch out that you don't loose that nice pull feeling she has.
Also you're getting very 'handsy' with a bit of twinning and a lot of large gestures. Try and tone down the hand gestures particularly towards the end.
Just Like Dubslice said about spot where she looks like she's hiccuping I would try something a little more subtle with the hands like:

Re: October competition
Hey murmer! Thanks for the input. I think you're right about the 'handsy'-ness of it. I'll be taking care of the twinning as I do the spline pass on the hands, but I hadn't thought about the amount of gesturing involved. Watching it again, I totally see what you mean.
I'm gonna be reworking the hiccup part. Now I can't unsee the hiccuping
I'm going for more of a startled "almost said something bad". I'm thinking I'll try selling that more with the face, and have the body and hands just pause for effect.
I love that reference image you posted! Gonna try working that in.

Re: October competition
Alright, got some more work in on this. I ended up reworking the end to take out that hiccup bit. I think it's working better now. I also started work on the hands. They're still pretty floaty, but at least they're not stepped anymore.
Starting to get a bit concerned about finishing this on time. Still got so much to do. But I'm gonna keep trying!

Re: October competition
It's great, however I'm quite concerned that you haven't another person in the scene. Even if the other person is just in an idle stance it would be improved. Also I'm concerned that you have just 4 days to complete the hand and facial movement ![]()
Around f 157, the swing is too much imo. It's too sudden and unexpected when everything else is quite subtle.
Otherwise good work, keep it up ![]()

Re: October competition
Ha! Oddly enough, that one pose was what I built this entire animation around. That's, if I may use an entirely inappropriate term, the money shot. I had intended for it to stand out. However, it sounds like it may stand out a little too much. I was planning on polishing up the spin a bit, maybe if I play with the timing some I can tone down the contrast. I'll tinker with it and see what happens.
I hear you about the time. Four days aren't much to wrap this up. But I'm darn well going to try! I don't think I've got time to add a second person, tho.

Re: October competition
Like reallly much the personality of your character, I want to see some facial animation, whenever you can, post it in here so everyone can watch it.. Another thing, did you animated already tehe hands, and fingers because they are to still and rigid
Cheers ![]()

Re: October competition
Hey Vicky! I want to see some facial animation too! I just can't seem to find enough time in the day to work on this.
No, I haven't done the fingers or the face. Those are next, though! Soon as I finish the arms. I've got the right arm almost complete, just gotta get the left arm up to par.
And here's the current WIP:

Re: October competition
I like it really much, really good sense of timing, as you are working on the arms maybe the left one between frames 254-275 moves kind of slow, you should make it move a little bit faster or just stay in other position
Cheers, keep updating your progress ![]()

Re: October competition
Progress!
I think I've got the arms in a good place. I'm still seeing a few tweaks I want to make (the movement at 100-110 in particular), but that can wait until later. The fingers actually got a keyframe or two, but only to make sure I was getting the contact between the hands right. Fingers are the last pass I'm doing before the final polish and conversion to splines (everything's still in linear keys right now).
And the face finally has keys! It's still really rough: just y-rotation on the jaw and a few facial expressions. But it's there!

Re: October competition
Woohoo! I'm feeling pretty psyched!
I think this is going to be my final submission. Depends on what tweaks I see and have time to fix. Right now, though, I can't look at this thing any more. We'll see how I feel about it in the morning.
Big thanks to everyone who gave me crits. You guys rock!
Yay!

Re: October competition
Looking pretty good! ![]()
- try fixing the part when she folds her hands together; it should be Open hands (frame 61), to slightly Closed hands (frame 71), to Open hands again (frame 78), to Closing the hands perfectly in between the fingers (frame 90)... BUT... make sure they close starting with the pinky working it's way up to the index. Right now, it's just closing way too fast and there's no anticipation on her RT_Hand when closing
- frame 273; RT_Hand pops
...I hope I made sense? ![]()

Re: October competition
Thanks, ricekrispyninja! I had actually tried having the fingers more extended on frame 78, but it ended up looking like the fingers were popping open-closed-open-closed way too fast. I did tweak it a bit and had the fingers close pinky-first, though.
Also, thanks for noticing the pop on 273. It's fixed now!
