MC Week 2 - Overlap

Ok so it's starting a day late but we still should have plenty of time.

This week, instead of more bouncing balls, we're going to go on ahead with overlapping/secondary action.

What to do: Animate anything that shows overlapping or secondary motion, such as a pendulum, the tail on a ball, a hair on a head, a fish, etc etc.
Time Limit: This time we will start with the standard 24 hour time limit. Please be honest with the time you spend on your piece.
Process: Depending on how much time you spend, it's completely fine to go past blocking.
Hint: A good way to do this is to animate the primary object, for example a bouncing ball, go through that with a blocking pass. Then go back with the tail and animate that straight ahead after the ball is done or you at least have the timing down.

Note: Once we get into more difficult themes, getting past blocking will become harder and harder. Bare with it for now and practice some fundamentals with us! smile

Sorry again for the confusion and starting late, but this should not be a problem in the future. I will make a schedule today of future challenges so we can know what to expect.

So get to it.

Re: MC Week 2 - Overlap

its a cool idea... and i like how he comes back around just hanging from the pendulum.. there are a few things that seem to catch my eye..

it seems awkward that it would start moving to the right but lean to the right as well.. if that happened to him, he'd probably fally off.. i think it would look better and make more sense  if he'd start moving with the head leading the way(tilting to the right as he starts moving).

although the timing and spacing feels pretty good, there are some parts that feel monotonous.. ex: when he does a take, around 155, the force of him going down and back up are pretty much identical which is ok but would definitely look better if one was stronger then the other.. maybe as he goes up since the going down is an antic...
also around 201, where he hits the timer and all of a sudden, it travels screen right... you can speed that up a little to give it more of a comic effect especially since i believe that is what you are going for..you can even hold his right hand up alittle longer and hit the timer harder..

as the timer flies screen right, i notice the left hand just jumps into that one position without even arcing. that can definitely be fixed.. it looks like there arent any breakdowns on it...

good animating!

Here's what I have so far.

I've spent about 6 hours on it so far, I may well go back and add a bit more. I couldn't believe how long it took me to get that far, clearly I had no idea how much effort had to go in to overlap. Any feedback is welcome as I really want to improve.

Cheers

Re: MC Week 2 - Overlap

@St_Jons
great idea! i think we all should combine all the challanges we have from the beginning. so the first was the bouncing ball the second is a bouncing ball with overlapping action, the third would be the .... with a bouncing ball and the overlapping  bla bla bla...
i think that idea would be great as well!

Re: MC Week 2 - Overlap

Thanks for the kind words, the reason I used this idea was because I missed out on the first challenge so figrued it would give me some practice in both. But yeah it would be a cool Idea to combine all the challenges

Re: MC Week 2 - Overlap

@ kiopaa
nice animation, i think you only need to add some more weight to the squirrel / fox.
where did you get the rig?
it looks like the flying fox rig but has a nicer tail.

Re: MC Week 2 - Overlap

@ dennis :
Thanks dennis, I made the rigs myself, I take inspiration from AM and the flying fox.
No problem to share the rigs but it's not maya, it's blender.

You said more weight, when the ball hit the pendulum ?

Re: MC Week 2 - Overlap

@kiopaa
yeah, i think the ball is going to fast. Or the ball is going to straight to the pendulum.
maybe a little more in a arc.
but... great animation anyway

Re: MC Week 2 - Overlap

Nice animation Kiopaa, I agree with dennisvolkerts that it could use more of an arc coming into the shot, but apart from that it looks good!

Re: MC Week 2 - Overlap

actually for me its very funny because i just want to give some advice of an animation here what looks abit stiff.. figured out that a better setup would make things easier..  So this little set up had needed his time and after 2hours fixing and tryin different kinds around i THought well.. i have to give it a go big_smile  not that easy  but i like it
