Re: [Basics] MC Week 1 - Ball Bounce - Start 6.6.2010/End 6.13.2010

Yeah this turned out really well guys. I'm glad so many people participated. I'll get the next one setup as soon as I think of a theme smile

Also, I don't want to be picking the theme each week, as I will surely run out of ideas. If someone else wants to take the reigns and help me out, feel free to start it. Just follow the format I set with this one and it's all good.

Re: [Basics] MC Week 1 - Ball Bounce - Start 6.6.2010/End 6.13.2010

How about ball interactions--There are to be two ball/more if you want.
They have to hit/contact each other[MUST] --could be any number of times--within an enclosed space[  o O ]---so that they are coming to rest inside the enclosed space.i.e. complete loss of momentum should be made visible[MUST]...
heavy ball vs light ball../any two balls of different materials/properties...

What say??

Re: [Basics] MC Week 1 - Ball Bounce - Start 6.6.2010/End 6.13.2010

NO ANIMATOR ever gets tired of bouncing balls.))
It's gonna get really interesting..
I'm sure the others will join in.

So i'll start a new topic [Basics] 2 MC Week 2 - Ball Interactions - Start 6.13.2010/End 6.19.2010

People can post their WIPs in "Personal Work and Demo Reels"
Don't forget to put MC(mini challenge) before the WIP post topic.

Here we go..

It may be just me, but I don't think its a good idea to allow any one to start a new topic, maybe we have a thread where people can throw out their ideas & the topics are picked from there & posted by a mod type person.

Re: [Basics] MC Week 1 - Ball Bounce - Start 6.6.2010/End 6.13.2010

Yeah perhaps that was a bad idea. I'm only saying that I won't be able to start it every week, and as such, someone else will have to pick up the slack for me.

Perhaps if we had a list or schedule of future challenges in specific order, that would be easier. Then all someone would have to do is go to the appropriate list and start the thread accordingly. It would also give everyone a preview of what to expect.

I think that's a nice idea actually, I might just do it. Unless some nay-sayer wants to keep things a surprise.

I think i've missed the boat here, apologies for that, but i've just finished my piece and i'd have to admit it took me a little longer than 12hours, I just wanted to get some feedback!

Re: [Basics] MC Week 1 - Ball Bounce - Start 6.6.2010/End 6.13.2010

jup your just too late!! smile
no.. i don't realy think thats a problem.. its for your own exercise anyway. but in real life there is a deadline.
but who am i to tell you that its no problem..

critics!!!!: the bouncing ball squashed to long. you better can add no squash at the middle of the bounce. and flatten it after it hits the ground. not before!
see example:
http://www.angryanimator.com/tut/pic/00 … /bal01.gif

for the rest nice rendering! Did your animation took more than 12 hours inclusive the render time or exclusive?
keep it up!

I know I'm super late but keeping up with this thread it hit me that I've yet to try a ball in maya too.  Thought it'd only be fitting to post here smile

Here is my attempt.  Cheers!

I realise I'm about two weeks late but I only really discovered this forum the other day and thought that this was a great idea so I made this. The first part's the fairly normal cartoony ball and the second bit's got some more extreme stretching going on.

Let me know what you think please smile

Re: [Basics] MC Week 1 - Ball Bounce - Start 6.6.2010/End 6.13.2010

Hey Bryn,

Just focusing on the normal video, but I think it applies to the extreme one as well.

To start off, be careful at frame 5-6.  I think you want the arrow to push the ball, but you have the ball moving with the arrow.  You want a frame where the arrow makes contact with the ball without the ball moving, and then have it force the ball forward.

Notice in frames 6-8 how far it goes forward and how it drastically reduces it's speed from 8-11.  Also it drops in really big increments, so now it looks extremely dense and heavy.  That would be fine but the starting push just didn't resemble a very heavy ball.

The resulting bounce after the first drop however is really disconnected in the sense of selling it's weight.  It becomes really light now with that bounce and it moves very fast.  That combined with the stretching of the ball makes it seem a little scattered.

I think something that might help is to just bounce a ball and get a feel of how it behaves.  Record it and study it slowly or just find a clip off of the net that you can download and frame by frame through.  I'm in the process of this myself and I think once we get the hang of it - then we can see where the rules can be bent.  Hope this helps!  Keep it up.

Camaro,
Yes, it's better that more people are participating.
I like the new idea.
But not everyone has a facebook account to login and see his video.
Please use Dropbox or submit it as a quicktime movie, it's explained in that thread.

Re: [Basics] MC Week 1 - Ball Bounce - Start 6.6.2010/End 6.13.2010

Hey all, made this last night and a little this morning.  Didn't finish, but I wanted to stay within the 12 hour time limit.  This lil' exercise is actually close to 3.5 hours of work.  I think I need to pick up the pace a little, but I am just happy I went ahead and did the "simple" ball exercise.  Anyway, here it is, reference taken from Youtube, btw.  (They have a a lot of useful reference videos.)

I am aware the roll at the end is a little funky.  I would have fixed that I still had time... I think what's important is the bouncing.

Re: [Basics] MC Week 1 - Ball Bounce - Start 6.6.2010/End 6.13.2010

Hi.  This is my first posting on 11 Second Club so hello.  I know I'm a bit late but I figured I'd get involved anyway. I'll see if I can catch up with the challenges!

Here is my ball bounce, it took me about an hour and a half.

The video seems to be scaled when it's embedded, lowering the quality.  Does anybody know why this is and how to solve the problem?

EDIT:  Okay, thanks for the feedback robcat2075.  I updated the animation, I hope it's better...

There are several things that seem "off" on this one.

-unless this is a huge, huge ball, it takes too long to get going.
-the ball doesn't evenly accelerate down the ramp but has a sudden jolt about 1/3 down
-then it hits a slow patch at the bottom , where it really would be going fastest of all.
-after it leaves the ramp it climbs up at a higher angle than the ramp was pointing.

Something is very odd about that QT file.  when I load it into the quicktime player it reports that it is 42fps which is... odd.

took me like 2 hours, coz id never used the graph editor before, so it took a bit of getting used to. i think it looks like it gets a bit stuck in mud towards the end of its bounces, but im gonna move on rather than try to fix it.

I think it looks pretty good! One thing though, your ball stretches on one frame only. It should stretch more and more as it picks up speed.

thanks. ive been told not to stretch things too much, or for too long, or you start to making the object feel less solid. i don't know tho, ill definitely be making more bouncing balls, so ill make one with more stretch.

Hey all,

Looks like I'm a little late to the party, but thought I'd post a simple ball bounce attempt.  I also posted it in the Personal Work and Demo Reels forum before I noticed this one existed and this seems a better place to put it.  I would welcome any comments/crits.
