WIP Playblast animation for February 2018 Competition

Direct Link

This is a work-in-progress play blast video.  Currently, I'm working reducing the steps in the walk.  I felt that their's too many steps.  Any comments?

Re: WIP Playblast animation for February 2018 Competition

I would say that there are too many steps and by starting him off so far away you miss a lot of the expression on his face as he is so small in the shot. I like the way he moves over to the left of screen at the end, but I would work on your staging at this point, as once again you will lose a lot of the facial expression as they are only taking up a small part of the screen. I like a lot of your acting choices, they are working quite well, just have a think about how much you are going to see in 560x316 resolution and try and make some adjustments. Keep up the good work, happy animating!

What if you started him leaning in the doorframe, and instead of so many little steps he kind of sliiiiiiiiiides through the scene in a very slick way? Kind of like you already have on "So I guess" which is very nicely done.

This is an update work-in-progress play blast video.  I had to reduce the steps down to 4 steps on the walk and I've add the character typing.

I have to agree with the previous comments. First, the "so i guess" slide looks really good and it really emphasizes that sarcasm. As far as the first steps go, maybe consider that he could start already closer to the other character so he can take maybe less and slower steps? Overall, the animation looks awesome! Keep up the good work smile

This is a new update work-in-progress play blast animation video.  I've added the lip syncs and facial expressions to both characters.  I also reduce the some steps a little more to have character walk slower as he heads towards the second character.  I'm still working on the finger movements.  Any comments?

Re: WIP Playblast animation for February 2018 Competition

This is coming along great!  The space bar taps on the clicking sounds was a nice touch.  I think you might be able to smooth the arc of the "HMMM" move a bit, he seems to change from going down to up very abruptly, but if you act it out I think you'll find it's more of a U shape and less of a V if that makes sense.  You anticipate and ease into the big move well, but he stops very abruptly, you might be able to get a bit of ease into that pose.  Last thing that stood out to me, the difference in his pupil size when he says HMM? is very strange/distracting, I think you'll find it works better if you keep them closer to the same size.  Great work so far! Keep going! and if you have a free moment, please lmk if there's anything in my animation that stands out to you.
Thanks!

Here's the latest update on the work-in-progress play blast animation.  I started working on the hair movements on both characters in this scene.  I also worked on the finger movements for  both characters.  Any comments?

Re: WIP Playblast animation for February 2018 Competition

In the last bit the main speaker raises his other hand and lowers it really fast, around when he says "about". It's distracting and not very realistic, raising an arm takes work and wouldn't be used to accent one tiny bit of dialogue.

This is coming along nicely! smile Few quick things that jumped out to me:

Tom's legs are popping/knees locking during the "Good... Good.."
Tom's blink on the first "Good" seems way too fast.
Tom's eyes at the end seem focused too far right and drift with his head when he says "Pounding"

Great work, keep it comin! smile

Re: WIP Playblast animation for February 2018 Competition

The finger wobble thing reads like the animator wanting every word to have a separate pose to illustrate it. The arm raise is very sudden though, and that whole action feels contrived. Does that read as genuine acting? It doesn't to me, no matter how much the movement is polished.

I think they're shooting for an exaggerated "Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs" style, so I could see the spirit finger "Spooky" gesture working.. that said, it does come off like you are trying to hit a few too many poses in the tiny amount of time for the performance, you might consider simplifying by losing the "Guess that means" palm up gesture and giving yourself a bit more time to get into the finger wobbling so it comes in before the "worried" rather than right on or just after.. Just an option.
