Feb WIP

Ello ello,

Here's my acting reference for "Tom".  I want him to come up behind a scientist-type guy working on a computer (Who I'm going to try and act out tomorrow).  Anywho, I'd welcome any feedback on the plan.

Re: Feb WIP

No complaints here! I generally am not a fan of the "match my lips exactly to the audio" style reference, but this isn't overacted, which tends to be what happens in such situations. Have you tried doing the other form of reference, where you act out the scene as the character in your own voice and inflections to see how it feels and what your body naturally does? Just a thought, as you progress!

Anyway, looking forward to seeing the progress. Good luck, onward and upward!

EDIT: Also what the heck kind of crazy room are you in there? Lol, that's quite the mural on the walls!

Re: Feb WIP

Hey JK!

I wish someone has suggested this years ago.  I've always lipsynced and I've always struggled not to overact.  I never connected the two. o_O Good stuff!

I live in a renovated vintage airstream here at Hollywood RV Park.. The trailer doesn't have a lot of space to shoot reference, so I borrowed the Park's rec room.  The owner is a huge fan of art, murals all over the place smile

Re: Feb WIP

Here's the first pass of the rough blocking (I haven't touched faces yet).  I'm not happy with it by any stretch of the imagination.  Any and all feedback welcomed.

Re: Feb WIP

I think it's a great start! Not overacted, which is the biggest plus, and generally well composed. You said you aren't happy with it, though. What are you not happy with? If you break that feeling down into a concrete list, it may help you fix whatever it is that's bothering you. You might also try moving the camera a little closer (or farther, who knows) and see what that new perspective affords you. Sometimes just changing the layout (not drastically, just distance wise) can spark an idea on what stands out as "great" and what needs improved. Whatever the case, keep going! It's shaping up nicely so far.

Re: Feb WIP

I think you've made a really good start here. There were a couple of small things that caught my eye though, one of which was Tom's shoulder as he's straightening back up. It almost looks like it's gimbal locked. You're likely to smooth that out when working in the graph editor though. The only other thing that kind of bothered me is the main part of Tom's reaction to everything being "nominal" feels like it might be a bit too early. This is possibly a personal preference thing but I think maybe keeping his expression just a little bit smaller at first and then getting bigger when he says "ah, nominal" might feel better. Just something to experiment with, perhaps?

Re: Feb WIP

The animation is coming out nicely! One thing, and I know this is WIP, but don't neglect the hip action when Tom is walking.. he seems a little static compared to his upper body that already has movement and the hips and maybe even the lower spine / root just seems a little stiff.  The same with the other guy, try playing around with a few movements coming from the root even though you can't see it, but it could help subtle movements look a little more "natural".
Overall though, good job! it's looking great!

Re: Feb WIP

Thanks for the feedback Avohcadoe and Paulina!  Yes, I'll have to figure out that shoulder pop for sure. Yeah I think what I'm trying to communicate with Tom's expression isn't coming through, the idea was he was lifting his eyebrows in interest, but I think it's coming across as he is reacting to soon to "nominal", so I'll have to figure out a way to address that, good catch! I'll definitely look at Tom's hips this weekend as well and try to get him feeling a bit more grounded.  I appreciate it guys! smile

Re: Feb WIP

Both his legs look bent in the final pose whereas in your reference the weight-bearing leg is straight.

Re: Feb WIP

Hey Ccs,
Thanks for the feedback! I'll check that leg out.  I don't think I want the knee locked, but now that I'm looking at it, the angle of his leg makes him seem a bit pigeon-toed lol.  Thanks!

Re: Feb WIP

Hi Chadcox,

I think the main character looks pretty stiff when he raise up a the beginning of the shot.

Keep up the good work.

Re: Feb WIP

Nice one. I think to make this scene working during a walk is very difficult, but you are pulling it off quite well.
I wonder if the character with glasses is pulling his arm back starting at frame 88 a bit too fast.
Maybe try switching from his open mouth to the "fake" smile at 134 even faster to underline the sarcasm (if that is your intention here).
When he shakes his head during "good, good", I feel like it comes a little too much from the shoulder.

Re: Feb WIP

Thanks for the feedback XarX, I finished rendering and submitted yesterday, but I'm thinking about going back in a week or two and seeing if I can improve it further, so I'll probably take a look at those things then... Thanks Wegg! I appreciate it guys, looking forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with and seeing your finished D&D animation XarX, love that concept! smile
