Delays and follow through

Hey all! I have seen that in 3d animation people work on delays and follow through in two ways..
either they make poses the way that the delay is already integrated in the poses or they shift the keys few frames later of the parts they wanna put delay on..
whats your approach on this? and is their a better way? Because I feel when you have a reference and you are copying the poses the delay is already integrated.. but when you are relying on your imagination shifting keys work better.. I hope its not a senseless question big_smile
I would love to know what you guys think about it.
