Beginner walk cycle

Hi all I have made my first walk cycle but something feels off and I can't tell what is wrong with it. Could someone help me with it please.

Re: Beginner walk cycle

Hey there!

One of the main issues is that you are missing rotation on the hips and torso. The whole body is completely stiff apart from up and down translation. If the character steps forward with his right leg, the hip rotates counter clockwise for the contact position and the torso rotates clockwise so the left shoulder is leading. The opposite is true for the other leg.

That would be the first issue to tackle. The head is similarly without movement.

I'd suggest filming yourself walking or finding some reference to study, it should help you immensely.

Re: Beginner walk cycle

cdgoodall pretty much nailed it. I feel the need to add that your rhythm is off and your transitions from one key to another have the odd pop in the limbs due to hyper extension. The contact poses seem very exaggerated for the rig you're using, very stylized and cartoony. If that's what you're going for it isn't reading as intentional.

Re: Beginner walk cycle

yeah now that you mention it however I used a template that was cartoony. but as you can see I have no formal experience in walk cycles so I have trouble with poses but mostly with the timing of the poses. Also the sound/song was added after, I was not thinking about making it to the beat of the song

Re: Beginner walk cycle

I still find it a bit stiff, and the hips still aren't rotating like Chris Goodall said, it's not giving the "looseness/flow" that the body has when walking. Perhaps you should exaggerate the key poses to help a bit.

What book are you using as reference, or what is it that you are using as reference in general?

Re: Beginner walk cycle

Awesome, the Animator's Survival Kit is a great book, I recommend it for sure, I'm certain others will agree as well.

A personal observation I've made by people watching is that when people are casually walking, they tend to walk with a distance of 1 foot (their size of feet) in between their front foot and their back foot. It will of course vary with the length of the person's legs also. I walk with a spacing of 1 feet and 3/4th because I have longer legs. I would imaging that the longer the legs, the larger the spacing.

There's actually a ton of factors that go into walks (which I think is super cool and fun) but yeah what you're doing right now is a good learning point.

Keep posting your progress, it'll be great to see you get a nice walk cycle!
