The Deep Blue Plea

Here is my current progress for the September competition. I'm pretty happy with it so far but any ideas for improvements are much obliged. The biggest problem is that I cannot get the arms to subdivide in the render. They look smooth in the view port. I click the outline of the word "fishboy" that is drawn by the feet, and it says "resolution" in the attribute editor, where i change that to 1, yet only the body subdivides and the arms stay low poly when rendered.

Re: The Deep Blue Plea

Great, Best of luck with that,
But i think you have time , to check and rectify something which is not working.
Like :-1.  After Dialog "Just may be" and before "I earned" her mouth is unnecessary opening and closing,
2. Her full acting is in sad mood, but he is smiling on some points.
May be i was wrong but you should check and fix.

Hope that helps smile

Re: The Deep Blue Plea

thank you! greenberet do you mean i shouldn't have her smile at all? or i should have her smile when she says "maybe" and turns to look up? I've been making adjustments to the lipsync and will post an update soon.

Re: The Deep Blue Plea

This is great so far... bravo. Heres a couple notes:

-the eye wipe feels like an after thought. I doesn't really fit and it almost feels like hes hitting himself in the eye the way he blinks.

-if there's a pelvis control work on the weight shift in the first two steps. It's kinda linear.

-after 'maybe' theres an eye dart that he looks towards camera. It throws the flow of searching for an answer off. I'd have him glance hard screen right and have the head force the eyes up into the next pose.

-the pose change for 'just maybe' is a direct inbetween. It goes straight into it. put the slightest curve in the head to get rid of the robotic feeling.

-love love love the thought process after 'before i die'

-I would lose the jump to screen as the final pose. Its too sharp for the acting you've got going on. Honestly a slight head tilt/looking up would sell it best while still in that pose. Save a copy of the file and play with that for a half hour. If it sucks, you only look a half hour and explored a different option.

-I'm jealous of the rain effect you've got going on... I'd love to add that to mine!! Where'd ya get it?! haha

Keep up the great work!

Re: The Deep Blue Plea

thanks for the tips polish! it's always good to get a new perspective cuz i didnt even notice those things. i will definitely work on them. if you want the rain effect its really simple. if you have after effects it has a filter called rain, lets you adjust the opacity, angle, density etc. i'd suggest getting after effects to compile render stills, it's great.

and auriaarvin i like the style of your animation, perfect for video games. is that rig available for the public to use by any chance?

oh greenberet i think i know what u meant by the mouth opening for no reason. if u listen the audio has little breaths in it and i had her open her mouth to take air in.

Re: The Deep Blue Plea

Thanks George! I agree, it's like something clicked and it became less about workflow and more about the final output. I have spent a lot of time every single day just watching all the videos they put on the home page from past competitions' top 11.  After a while you start to see what it is people like and what they don't.  I think when you let go and really learn from the past and not try to do it all alone is when people improve.

Re: The Deep Blue Plea

I could give you the version I have, but its so terrible I don't want to lol. I mean it works, its just awful and real buggy because I didnt rig it, its on a retarded auto-rig. Im having a very hard time with it atm, I need to rig it myself from scratch when I get time!

Re: The Deep Blue Plea

Thank you for all the advice! Polish 63, I did everything you mentioned and it really strengthened my piece! Also, I added some nice squash and stretch to the face that really brought it to life.

Here is my final entry.
