Question about difference between two keys

Hi !

I'm animating the june 11 sec, but I have a question since a long time which haunt me. I don't know if, between two poses, it's different to :
- put a key in the middle of the timeline, and choose a pose more or less late (exemple A in my exemple of a ball)
- make a pose exactly in the middle of the other both but put the key more or less late in the timeline (exemple B)

I think my question is really strange and complicated to understand (it's hard to explain my problem -__-), so I have done a (gorgeous) drawing :

Sorry for my english, and thanks if you try to explain me smile

Re: Question about difference between two keys

It will be different.  How different depends on what the interpolation between the keys is.

Re: Question about difference between two keys

Salut Helene!  Yeah I would say it depends on what you're going for.  When easing in and out of poses, I tend to do Example A... but that doesn't mean that I don't B either.  Just depends on what you're going for.  Each will give a different feel, and you should just do what feels best for the animation.  There's no "technically" right answer to it.  What I would just do, is just do a test of the two different in-betweens with the same poses and see how they feel.  Then you'll have an idea in your head what each one looks like, and when you can apply each one in your animations.  Hope that helps!

Re: Question about difference between two keys

I think I understand the question Helene... and if I am right I think you are confusing the link between timing and spacing.  To me, looking at your example image, what you have done is changed the spacing of the ball (the position between pose 1 and 2) and the timing of that pose (where you place the key)... so to my eyes the 2 examples you have will probably give you very similar results.

Timing and spacing are often confused... Perhaps it is better to describe it as if you have the same breakdown pose and you change the time it hits on the timeline (the position of that breakdown would affect the transition from pose A to pose B).   Alternatively you can place your breakdown right between key A and key B, but you would then need to be aware of how your breakdown pose works - ie are your hips easing in to pose B, your arm may be dragging at this point etc)

So what I think you mean here is should you place your breakdown pose right between your keys on the timeline, or maybe have a bias towards one or the other key.  Honestly it depends on the action, the style and the amount of detail you are going into during blocking... there is no right answer.

Here are some tutorials I found recently that may help

Re: Question about difference between two keys

Ok, I think I should try the both examples to see, if it's different to make favouring (I don't know is it's the right word) for the breakdowner in the timing or in the spacing !
