24 hour challenge

Hey guys, so a few of us had discussed the possibility of having an annual 24 hour animation challenge. The idea is we will start from a certain time in the day, everyone wanting to participate can meet on skype (most likely a Sunday).

From there the days assignment will be handed out. Everyone will have the same amount of frames, same shot, same everything to work with, and will have 24 hours to complete the piece. Time frame will always be around 2-3 seconds.

From here we can all communicate via skype, our successes, our struggles, our workflow etc....
If people are having issues someone working on the same shot will be available to help.
From chatting on skype so far, myself and 3 others have expressed interest.

Anyone else who is interested in hopping on board please comment below and leave your skype name. We will set up a skype room with all interested animators and start the challenge on an appropriate date.

Don't be afraid of not feeling skilled enough to join in. It's a great opportunity to experience first hand how others approach a scene, and get some really fast feedback, and of course to learn!

Re: 24 hour challenge

I'm in. But, I don't think you understand the meaning of the word "annual". Is it gonna be every day? Cuz annual means once a year, lol.

Re: 24 hour challenge

There's a possibility that he meant an Annual - 24 hour competition.  So, once a year, we here at 11 Second Club, have a massive 24 hour animation challenge.

Just another .02 cents.

Re: 24 hour challenge

Ya we hadn't really discussed how annual anything would be. Monthly, bi monthly, I guess if enough interested it can be done as much as the interest dictates.
By annual I meant recurring. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: 24 hour challenge

I know we were talking about monthly, and that sounds good for me. Otherwise we could just go everyday for the hardcore ones (NO SLEEP big_smile)

Re: 24 hour challenge

If its once a week its too much like the Mini Challenges, once a month is like the main challenge. I say like, every other day?

Re: 24 hour challenge

I'm thinking this could happen minimum of every couple of months, especially with the level of organisation it would take. Designed and planned well, each one could really be a great experience.

Re: 24 hour challenge

Wow, I'm blown away by the people who have come out of the woodwork to participate in this. I thought it would be 4-5 people at first. Think were around 13 now. I think it can happen as much as interest dictates. That being said, in order for people to get the most out of this here's what I'm thinking one person will need to prepare. Now feedback here is appreciated.
- the idea for the 24 hr challenge.
- prepare a downloadable scene file.
- in scene file will be a referenced basic rig from c:/rigname im thinking Norman may be best, as everyone has him. That way people can just drag Norman to the c drive.
Start pose, stop pose, basic prop if needed.
If people are not using Maya, screenshots will be provided of set camera and poses, and they can do that way. Also if they are brave enough to do hand drawn.
I know we always bicker about other software, but 90 percent here use Maya.
It may sound limiting having start and stop pose and frame limit. But the restrictions will be a great way to see how people tackle the same shot, and allow people to make the most of their time.
That's all I got for now.
There's also do this, do it in 60 frames. Do it how you want.

Re: 24 hour challenge

Having an already set up scene and time limit is okay... we'll be working like this in the production environment anyways, so its actually a great way to go about this challenge, but is the start pose and stop pose necessary? I don't know, just asking smile

Re: 24 hour challenge

I like the idea now that its more fleshed out. Personally I like the predetermined poses. Should be fun.
About the rig choice, Normans fine but Morphy has better CTRLS for some things. I had some serious problems once getting the elbow to not move while Norman was sitting at a table.

Let me install Skype on linux and see if it works. Count me in.

Re: 24 hour challenge

why should we settle on a single rig? We could choose a library of rigs just for this challenge and pick a rig that best suits the particular challenge we're working on.. like we could use norman for pure body mechanics shot, and morphy for acting shots.. something like that?

Re: 24 hour challenge

well, the idea originally was having a ready made scene file, that everyone could jump into and start animating right away.

Productive!

Re: 24 hour challenge

I'd love to, but sadly my schedule won't allow for it. I'm extremely busy with animation work in general, and weekends are dedicated family time. Sorry, but good luck to everyone who's going to give it a whirl!

Re: 24 hour challenge

hey guys, sorry its been so long for an update as to the 24 hour challenge.
It's all sorted out now, and we will be having the first 24 hour challenge on January 8th, 2012.
How it's going to work is all interested participants are asked to leave us their skype name. We will keep a master list of all interested people. We will than contact you and make sure you are an active person on the 11 community. We want to keep all spammers out of this forum once it's set up.
You can then communicate with everyone who will be doing the 24 hour challenge in the skype room, we will have a thread open here that you can post your progress etc....
The challenge will not be released until the day of January 8th, and all entrants will have until the 9th to hand in their animation. Now due to the fact the timezones will be a little radical there will be more than 24 hours from the release date till the hand in date to be fair to everyone.
