MC 20: The Circus

Hey guys and gals,
Number 20!! Whoop! Now lets celebrate and have some fun!

This challenge is based upon the circus. There are many, many possibilities it could be really interesting to see what is produced. It could be a clown, an acrobat, a ring master, a lion tamer... just open your mind and enjoy!

Character Design To get you in the mood, I wish to share a link to Disney's 1937 short, ''Mickey's Circus''. I love when the little seal swallows the fish, yet still innocently looks around for it. Such character and so cute!

Again the animation could be aware between 75-125 frames. If you have any questions about submission requirements, please check the How-to-participate section for more details.

Re: MC 20: The Circus

Man, they just do not make things like that anymore. I couldn't help but grin ear to ear the whole time. So good. So, so good....

Anyway, this sounds like a tough challenge, so hopefully we get some great entries!

Re: MC 20: The Circus

Its as complex as you wish it to me. Could be a walkcycle, or a particular type of take. Just use the word as a starting point.

Another source of inspiration could be the clowns in Dumbo. How one walks up a three step ladder still make me smile every time.

If you are making one JKR, perhaps we can see Fred the Monkey again. I loved the contrast in the personalities in your clip, so to see this taken further could be interesting. Of course completely depends on you and your schedule.

Re: MC 20: The Circus

Heh, Fred at the circus? Certainly could be fun to do.

Unfortunately this go around I don't think I'll have quite as much time. As you know, I'm working on another start-up project right now, plus there's a 5 minute Feature Fred the Monkey cartoon to be released in November, and I'm busy tending to that. If I manage an entry for this one, it will have to be rough around the edges. But I really would like to do something, because I learn a lot every time I do these! smile

Re: MC 20: The Circus

Since I was MIA on the last challenge, think I will attempt this one.  That's a great little short - slapstick humour & crazy falls etc. that they recover instantly from. Also really liked the use of Donald Duck's hat .. reminded me of how Puss in Boot's hat was a big device in the recent movie.

Re: MC 20: The Circus

I sketched out thumbnails for Fred at the Circus, and I'm honestly thrilled with how it turned out. It makes me both REALLY want to attempt this and REALLY not. Yes because this part turned out so dynamic and well, but no because I feel like I'll never do these thumbnails justice if I redo them in larger form! tongue

Re: MC 20: The Circus

Hello JKR, sorry I have been unable to comment. I have been away. It looks like a great set of thumbnails. I particularly like that sharp vertical line of action when he lands on his face. Also news, I think I have found the next challenge after this one. If you have seen Chocobilly's ''Darkstalkers'' post, probably give you a big clue smile

As for Klaw, sure would be great to see you take part again.

Re: MC 20: The Circus

Lol, super slowly. Sigh... I've done like a dozen roughs of just the first pose and I can't seem to get the weight right. I think I might just move on to the next part and live with it not being what I want. After all, time is running short...

Re: MC 20: The Circus

Here's my first pass. I'm not happy with how far he flies to the left after slipping, so I'll change the ending there and move his crashed pose to the right a bit more. Otherwise it's still super early, so it's hard to really judge it too much. I think the poses are alright, though obviously they could be stronger. I just need to get other work done too, so I think I'll continue from this point and move forward with it! (I'm pretty sure I could sit here tweaking just these frames for the next year and a half tongue )

Re: MC 20: The Circus

unless you have an chin made of iron, this is def a tricky one to reference. I was meaning to come online today, give a bit of advice, but had to pop back to my hometown visit a poorly family member. Means I havent got access to quicktime etc to watch your clip. However, it is coming along great. Keep pushing and I look forward to seeing how it finishes

Re: MC 20: The Circus

Gah, I was laid up over the weekend with an injury and didn't get to work on this! Doh...

Maybe I can at least throw in a few quick, rough in-betweens today and post whatever I've got by the end of the afternoon. Sorry about that. Believe me, I'd much rather have been fully functional and not sitting here in pain.

Re: MC 20: The Circus

Alright, well, it's rough, but it's what I've got. Sorry it isn't better, but I'm pretty happy with parts of it, to be honest. Not so much the fall (I think I need a better arc in there) but I really like how the anticipation for the jump went, as well as the final "FLOP" to the last pose.

Until next mini-challenge!

Re: MC 20: The Circus

Hi JKR, that's a nice shot I really like the flop, just an idea you could add some floating stars over his head at the end to close it and to fill the dead space on your last frame smile
