Mc 18: Lamp and ball

On the 5th October 2011, Pixar co-founder, Steve Jobs, sadly passed away. In celebration of his life and his work to establish the company, this fortnight's challenge is inspired by Luxo Jr.

Direct Link

The challenge is to create an interaction between a ball and lamp. It is the second time we have produced this challenge, but we are hoping the community can inject some new life and story into the character.

Remember to plan your animation out before you start and think about the foundations that help build good character animation. By this I mean its most basic principles which include timing, weight and also appeal.

Lastly, remember to tell the idea simply. In the words of Steve Jobs: '“That’s been one of my mantras–focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.''

Have fun!

Please note: 2d, stopmotion and 3d are all welcome. Frame rate should be 24fps, 16*9 ratio and animation length should be about 100-125f. Deadline is 24th October. Please check the blog's ''How to Participate'' section for more notes on submission requirements. For Maya users, the Pixo Jr rig can be downloaded here.

Re: Mc 18: Lamp and ball

Ya we had a pretty low turnout last time we did this one. Looking forward to seeing some more entries this time, as it seems we had a great turnout last week. Hopefully everyone can incorporate what they learnt with last assignment and improve even more with this one!

Re: Mc 18: Lamp and ball

hello blackbird,
steve jobs inspired the idea, it definately seemd most fitting. But as said in his quote, Keep things simple. Focus on one thing at a time. If uni is crazy at moment, your uni sounds the more important right now!

@kiopaa. I am not sure how to produce that file for you. I have looked in my export options, but not sure how. Hope somebody else can help you out here. Good luck to all!

Re: Mc 18: Lamp and ball

Just go to : Window > Settings/Preferences > Plug_in Manager, and turn on the objExport.ml plugin.
After that, you could export in .OBJ from the File menu.
Thanks a lot

Re: Mc 18: Lamp and ball

Hey joan, the idea is very nice and cool. the ball could use some work, maybe in the graph editor coz it lacks some ease ins and outs (most vivid at the part where the ball speeds up towards the end instead of slowing down). as for the lamp, i think u should check some of the excessive movement that's going on with the main body. it looks kinda messy in the middle section. on the all, it needs some more work but it's a playful and fun shot. keep going. smile

Re: Mc 18: Lamp and ball

hey @joan nice entry bro, but i agree with what @blackbird256 said, you need to work out the middle section.
Every movement have a purpose, an inner motivation that leads the lamp..

I also have a progress, what do you guys think ?

Re: Mc 18: Lamp and ball

Hey kiopaa, I hope this is what you are looking for. I really am not sure.

@esquilogp, im not sure if your hole appears out of nowhere? I like what you are going for, its unique and I love the swinging/throw of the ball. Really interesting piece. Well done

@jooan, you certainly need to strengthen some of those poses. Tone the movements down. Similar to an owl, the lamp's head would move differently from an humans. This also includes its neck. Good luck!

Re: Mc 18: Lamp and ball

@avijit. I liked the idea I just passed to you, but writing here so others maybe able to help or use similar set up.

If anyone is good with lighting, use a perspective view and put the lamp in a spotlight -shaped like the apple logo. It could set up a nice mood to the piece

Here is my progress so far... It's hard to put an interaction sequence on 5 seconds.

I have to get rid of some snappiness and put more weight in it. This was the first time i blocked out a sequence...

Yep thats why we call it a challenge smile

Both ball and lamp need more control on the weight. But the idea looks fab! Good luck!

p.s. in terms of having a restricted time, it is just a matter of quality over quantity. We'd rather two secs of great animation, as opposed to ten of weaker. And I love esquilogp's idea of wheeling him in on its base. Its a creative way to move pixo across the screen, without using too many frames

Re: Mc 18: Lamp and ball

Animatroid, the characters definitely need more weight and believability. You might have to do some more work either with the curves or with more keys. I love the way the lamp plays with the ball. Very interactive.

Avijit, can't wait to see it with more polish. It's fine for now.

Esquilogp, I have to ask; is the lamp flying at the beginning? coz that would be so cool. (oh and great work on the swing, man.)

The apple thing you guys just mentioned might have just given me the idea I've been looking for. Am still thumb nailing in my free time till I find an idea that I'm quite happy with. Great weekend everyone.

Re: Mc 18: Lamp and ball

I believe Esquilogp lamp is actually wheeling in on the base. It may need lighting to make this more obvious.

Glad you like the apple idea. Just seemed a nice sentiment

Re: Mc 18: Lamp and ball

Hey guys, i have had a busy weekend with my family.. but i did some progress with my character !

@thelittlepenguin84  @blackbird256 thank you guys for the thoughts..
Yeah he is wheeling  on his base, in my planning  i realized that he could be some kind of biological evolution of pixar's luxo
What i mean is that he is independent from eletrical wiring.. his source of power comes from batteries, so he can move
with more flexibility.. besides he is a sort of fella with great energy, curious but craven at the same time..

Re: Mc 18: Lamp and ball

haha way to go wolfer, that's looking very nice. I think the balling hitting the lamos head and the turn... well almost all of it looks really nice! The only thing that looks off is the jump he does over to the ball. I'm not completely sure what it is, but I think that you should check your timing and spacing in the air, it looks like the landing is a little took cushoned.

Esquilogp your is really looking nice as well. You have some really nice poses going on. I would say that the beginning threw me off a little, and it took me a few views to understand that he was rolling on his side. Not sure if a shadow would help it read or not, but I would look into making that more readable.

Keep it up guys! Your work inspires me smile
