MC 16: It's a Slam Dunk!

It's not just about making a basket, it's about MAKING a BASKET! The current two-week mini-challenge is Basketball's world famous slam dunk. You can find out more, and see some incredible examples, right here on the 11 Second Club Blog! So don't delay, click today!

This thread is the place you want to submit your final entries before Monday September 26th. (But this isn't a shot from half-court, so don't wait for the buzzer!) Just post a link and you're good to go. In the meantime why not consider posting some work-in-progress videos as you complete your entry? You never quite know what another animator might be able to add from their own unique perspective. Plus you might just inspire someone else to give this a shot!

Good luck, everyone!

Re: MC 16: It's a Slam Dunk!

Youtube makes it quite hard for people to critique your work. I would suggest using the drop box method.

Re: MC 16: It's a Slam Dunk!

using quicktime and dropbox makes it not only easier to critique, but also easier to collect the work and post it onto our blog. Dropbox is also free and really user friendly smile

As the above folks have usefully pointed out, Quicktime is a better bet using Dropbox (or another uploading site, if you prefer). That said, you are absolutely more than welcome to share your work with the rest of the world via YouTube! There's no restriction about only submitting it here. smile

Re: MC 16: It's a Slam Dunk!

Ok, I've read all the above, I've read the blog, the rules and I've seen both clips...
The rational guy in me understands this week's MC is about basketball players dunking their ball.
Still, the annoying little brat in me (most animators come in multiple characters, don't they?) still has a question...

I signed up this community earlier this month and I was eager to get started on the September competition,
only to find out it's a bit of a stretch for an absolute beginner. So, after reading some suburb threads
("Some thoughts on learning and practising animation" being one of them) and getting sublime advice of
some equally sublime members of this fine community, I decided it's better to stick to the basics...

So it's back to the bouncing ball for me.
Only...
This "Slam Dunk MC" seems to me like an excellent opportunity to take that bouncing ball a step further.
Thus...
Am I allowed to animate just the ball? Without the player?
Try to put some character in the ball like the world famous Pixar lamp for instance?
In other words, put a seemingly boring exercise to some use?

Just had to ask,
Serge

Re: MC 16: It's a Slam Dunk!

You are officially allowed to do ANYTHING YOU WANT! smile

Animation is awesome like that. There are very few "rules." If your animation conveys a "slam dunk" then I say go for it. I sincerely doubt anyone else would have a problem with that either. It's animation, not law school. We're all supposed to think outside the box!

Much luck to you, and keep at it.

Ha ha, no worries, I was just kidding with you. Happens all the time. smile

BallSquash, that's looking pretty good so far! One thing I'd mention is the timing on the jump seems a little off. Right after his big launch he should be really jetting towards the hoop, especially since he's coming towards the camera, but it slows down a bit, it seems. Otherwise, good start! Looking forward to seeing more.

Not an over the top dunk, but it is stretched reality because I used my own body for reference. Although if you see the reference footage I can NOT dunk like this!

TT99991 : That's really nice! I do think you have too much squash in the ball on the first drop though.

I imagine I'm the only one here that actually CAN dunk xD

Your shot is looking pretty nice, just clean up the arcs, and watch the even spacing on the way down.

Re: MC 16: It's a Slam Dunk!

i agree with both. To start with, watch the weight on the jump. He feels like he is a bit light in the air.

As anybody else managing to score a slam dunk, I'm 5ft 4. That's pretty short, but one day, if I try hard enough, I'll achieve my dream smile

loving esquilogp's clip by the way. Its pretty cool. Same to ballsquash

Re: MC 16: It's a Slam Dunk!

Thanks y'all... and I actually can dunk, but its not worthy of animation! Just a typical arm stretched out as much as possible!

6'1" and white!

Re: MC 16: It's a Slam Dunk!

I knew a dude who was 5'10" on a good day and slammed it like Shaq.

Tt, I'm the same way, I jump just enough to dunk it, no more, no less. Not to show off, but this is actually a video of me:
