Hey everyone!

I thought I'd dive into these challenges to keep practicing the basics over the summer. I went for a very simple hand and ball interaction. Here is my latest pass. Any comments or criticism is appreciated; I know there is a whole lot that I can improve.

I feel like it might look better if he picked it up with him palm, as opposed to just his fingers...if that makes sense.

Hmmm that is strange, I just playblast it and then drop it into dropbox thinking it be similar or even better than uploading it to youtube/ vimeo.

and also I thought you can get the frame count if you play it in quicktime anyway thats why I did it in dropbox so you could use quicktime to view the frame count?, or am I totally missing something?

At the min, just uploading it to vimeo so hopefully you can view it better.

but shall sort it out in the future so it will upload as quicktime to view in frame number

Try and get the hand to come up a bit before it catches the ball, and then translate down a bit as it catches it. It's how we naturally cancel out the falling speed of an object I feel!

Cheers for the advise big_smile I shall fix the solution, if you spot anything else, then please let me know smile

Re: Mini-challenge week 10: Hand and ball interaction

@ DNW620 You may wish to break up the timing of the fingers as it grabs the ball. They presently all grab at the same time. Offset the timing so one finger follows another. Also, have a look at the movement of the ball. I love the release, but again, possibly tweak the fingers.
As misterate said, it may look better if you grab the ball with the palm, while look at the animation on the ball itself. When is the ball being pushed by the force of the hand? It also strangely rotates on frame 24. A twist in the wrist would make this action happen, which I'm not sure is there at movement.

@ stacey,
For a simple frame counter, go to 'display' 'heads up display' 'current frame'. It'll be a very small one, but easiest to produce.
for a dropbox link to be viewed, it needs to be a quicktime mov, not an avi.

Again, think about offsetting etc while animating the fingers.

@ajfrank 'after the hand pokes the ball, u should have the ball transform into like a godzilla type creature and have him bite the dudes arm off and have gallons and gallons of blood squirting out for like 20 minutes and then finally have the dude collapsing from blood lost'

erm...

what I'm trying to say with adding character, can be better expressed when taking Pixar's Luxo animation as an example. Both lamps look similar, except in size, yet have two very separate personalties. I could invite people to choose any object such as a dollar bill, a pencil, a pair of glasses, a set of keys. This would mean the complexity of the challenge could then be determined by the shape of the object.

Instead, the challenge is to see how creative you can be when limited to simply one hand and a ball.

Re: Mini-challenge week 10: Hand and ball interaction

How does everyone feel about the challenge ending on Monday, midnight wherever you live? Cosmicfool has designed the next challenge, which will be about composition and staging.

@sketch404, that shot really is beautiful mate. 6 hours?? Ive got a lot to learn smile Just clicked your 11 second entry to find out who you are, your piece looks fun and made me smile. Would love a link to your portfolio if you have one?

@Merj, your arm (screen right) is stiff and juddering a lot, certainly moves in less of a smooth arc than the first arm. Hope this can be fixed.

Re: Mini-challenge week 10: Hand and ball interaction

hello,
I'm having a little go myself.

Direct Link

the idea is that as the hand thumps the surface, the ball will bounce upwads and be snatched in the air. wanted to try and make the hand look evil, which I'm finding a bit complicated as the palm doesn't cup very well. will be done so I hope

Update! Changed the timing a little and built a stronger anticipation pose before the grab. Probably make a few more tweaks, but what do you guys think?

@ chocobilly. Thank you. I think also you will like the look of the next challenge. The next one is out of my hands, designed by Cosmicfool. Revealed on monday and hopefully they will continue to grow. Definately pleased with the way things are developing smile

Re: Mini-challenge week 10: Hand and ball interaction

I'm gunna have to take on next's weeks challenge, my past week or so has been pretty loaded.  Plus I might've jumped too far in creating a drastic interaction which was a bit beyond me, but hey it's the first time I recorded my own reference instead of youtubing (webcams are blurry).  So next time! I am amazed with a lot of the entries so far.  Nice job everyone

Re: Mini-challenge week 10: Hand and ball interaction

hey pratik,
one simple suggestion, will really help for presentation. display the gate mask, which will hide the border around the piece.

To do so, click on view 'select' camera', 'display options', tick 'display gate mask'.  This will help the illusion that its just an arm. Up to you because its a very nice piece. Love the creativity of using a ramp, and the push is pretty cool

only critique is there is a pop on the thumb around frame 60-62

Re: Mini-challenge week 10: Hand and ball interaction

hello stacey,
are you able to encode this using quicktime. Here's a link to show you how http://www.11secondclub.com/helpful_hints/encoding Its the same way as monthly entries to the main site.

problem I have is your file is currently 122mb. Its taking a while to download. You should be able to get that down to about 10 and not lose much quality. Just much quicker and easier to collect and post files if everyone uses the same method. Presentation also looks much better too. Sorry to be a pain.

I created a post http://blog.11secondclub.com/2011/06/mi … ipate.html hoping to answer any questions you may have. If you have any others, please do not hesitate to give me a shout. Thank you

Re: Mini-challenge week 10: Hand and ball interaction

apologizes, I have another request. i need to ask you to hide the nurb cruves, or all of the controls. We cant see your a lot of the action as the controls are hiding them.

Re: Mini-challenge week 10: Hand and ball interaction

@stacey: You've got some nice things happening in there, especially in the wrist movement. A very easy tweak to plus the ball pickup would be to simply move your keys on the fingers forward about 5 frames so that they close around the ball as the hand gets to it rather than when the hand is still moving downward. Hope this helps!

Re: Mini-challenge week 10: Hand and ball interaction

Thank you DNW620 for the feedback smile I shall do that then.

@thelittlepenguin84: For some reason I cant seem to get the curves off them, I simply went into Show- and deselect the nurbs curves which hidden the controls but not the curves, it is probably soooo simply but cant seem to find the solution lol

the rig I used was the norman old lady, so if you know the rig better than I do, can you pretty please tell me so then I can upload it again without them on and plus future reference too big_smile
